Beating expectations, President Barack Obama's health care overhaul was on track to sign up more than 7 million Americans for health insurance on deadline day Monday, government officials told The Associated Press.
The 7 million target, thought to be out of reach by most experts, was in sight on a day that saw surging consumer interest as well as vexing computer glitches that slowed sign-ups on the HealthCare.gov website.
Two government officials confirmed the milestone, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the matter ahead of an official announcement.
Seven million was the original target set by the Congressional Budget Office for enrollment in taxpayer-subsidized private health insurance through new online markets created under Obama's signature legislation.
That was scaled back to 6 million after the disastrous launch of HealthCare.gov last fall. Several state-run websites also had crippling problems.
Americans who rushed to apply for health insurance Monday faced long, frustrating waits and a new spate of website ills on deadline day.

Haha. Very interesting.
Same old tried and true tactic. No matter what, lie and lie big. The ministry of propaganda reports it as he truth and the GOP is left to deny it as if it was an accusation. Why can’t they ever get ahead of these thing? I mean, was there ever any doubt that no matter what the Obama administration would claim to meet these numbers? Was there any doubt that its ministry of propaganda would slavishly report it as the truth.
If I am the GOP I tell every one of my members to keep it simple and say this: “Those numbers are false. But what do you expect from an administration that falsely told Americans if they liked their plans or Doctors they could keep them.”
Yes a huge number of the signups were eligible after Obamacare changed the eligibility rules and if their state agreed to the new lower eligibility requirements (about half the States didn’t)
But they weren’t eligible before. Before Obamacare you had to be not only very poor with no assets, you also had to be either pregnant or single mother with children under 5 or be poor and profoundly disabled.
Under the new Obamacare Medicaid expansion, you only have to have a low income. That’s it.
That’s how they are getting so many “newly insured”.
These people were signing up under old rules, not the new ACA.
