Imprisoning gays and lesbians for their sexuality is a disgrace that should disqualify offending countries from EU aid, the president of the European Parliament, Martin Schulz, told a joint summit with MPs from the Pan-African Parliament yesterday (31 March), sparking a row.
On 25 March, Ethiopia became the third African country, after Uganda and Nigeria, to institute long-term imprisonments for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) people, with other African states, including Kenya, said to be preparing to follow suit.
This represented an unacceptable violation of the basic rights of individuals said Schulz, who has been widely tipped to be the next president of the European Commission, after elections in May.

Imperialists.
Starve “the children” because a country has anti-queer laws? The commie libs are really getting serious about all of their homo BS.
And aid to Muslim countries?
Oh, thought so.
Hippocrits, liberals - all!
He hates black people.
are they going to cut aid to the Palestinians too? and all other muslim countries in the middle east?
I thought we were supposed to be helping poor black countries. Just because they want to choose their own standards does not mean these people should be punished.
I am so sick of how people have to agree with the left or else.
Certainly not. And Schulz certainly made that clear in the Knesset back in February . . .
I might also add that this kind of coercion might make it easy for Putin to gain creds with these countries.
Cut aid to African countries
There. Fixed it.
Tolerating sodomites is the disgrace.
Schulz is a socialist (head of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in fact), so this is the norm for him.
Russia and china will give them aíd.
One witch hunt, meet second witch hunt. Enjoy the fun.
True enough, not much stink about Islamic countries. There’s a hierarchy of nasty here.
Both have poxy houses.
If the two others have followed Uganda’s pattern, they’ve set up a framework that pushes it to the point of witch hunt. Maybe there will be further reforms, but in passing I’d want to point out that the bible regime needed two witnesses and would also penalize false witnesses in line with the penalty for what they had falsely accused, for a reason. Departing from Christ on the right is no cure for departing from Christ on the left.
I don’t know what it takes to prove sodomy in these countries. But getting caught in flagrante delicto would certainly qualify, I have to believe. In that case, there is nothing “witch hunt” about it and the penalty should be swift and certain.
In the case of a mere accusation of homosexualty against a particular individual, I would hope the standard rules of evidence and burden of proof prevail, and that exoneration would clear the defendant’s name.
Well they’ve gone to the point that “knowing” about it (not specified what counts as knowing) and not saying anything is also considered a crime. That’s going to put a big crimp in already embattled Christian recovery ministries.
Also China. China won’t care how they deal with their sodomites, as long as they let them access their resources.
I feel so very sad for the Crimeans who will not be part of this enlightened and humane transnational world.
