I am not naïve enough to believe that having elected Mitt Romney president or consigning the Democrats to the minority in both houses of Congress would change all that. But unless you are ready to give up on electoral politics entirely and I confess to wavering on that question with a bias toward despair then it is a matter of deciding whether X is preferable to Y. And sometimes that is a pretty easy call. Contemplating the inevitable shortcomings of elected Republicans, conservatives may consider the situation and think: The lesser of two evils is still evil. And it is. But its also lesser. And if thats the choice we have, it may be unpalatable but it is a choice that we have to make. I liked the Cthulhu 2012 slogan Why Vote for a Lesser Evil? but thats a joke, not a program. The reason to vote for a lesser evil is because were responsible adults who dont want the greater evil to prevail.
If this seems inconsistent with more than a little of what I have written before, I suppose a personal note is in order. I left the Republican party because I didnt want to be part of any organization that would have Arlen Specter as a member, and because I was appalled at the fiscal incontinence of the Bush years. And Ive very much enjoyed being able to tell people that Im not a Republican. (Some days more than others, as you might imagine.) That being said, I am coming around to the view that Id rather be disappointed by Republicans who periodically fail live up to their principles than have my country pillaged and hobbled by Democrats who consistently live up to theirs.

Ditch Mitch at all costs.
“The reason to vote for a lesser evil is because were responsible adults who dont want the greater evil to prevail.”
Then stop complaining about the GOP since you got the lesser evil you wanted.
Can’t have it both ways folks.
Mitt Romney was far from being a republican and light years away from being a conservative.
Was he the lesser of two evils? I don’t care, I gave up on voting for the lesser of two evils after voting for McCain. I said “never again” and I damn sure meant it.
After the utter disaster of obama, possibly the GOPE will consider backing a conservative - I know, I kid myself.
So you think there’s no difference between Mitt Romney and Barak Obama?
Should have asked the question of the original author...
Bingo.
Going by their records, nope. Not enough to matter. Both pro gay, anti military, pro socialist healthcare, pro illegal...and many other points.
Oh and Romney’s liberalism helped move the whole of the GOP left. See their votes since the slaughter for proof. Thats something Barry couldn’t even do.
Agree. At all costs!
There is a difference between liberal and socialist.
Not really anymore. It’s really a semantic argument at this point. Today they are one and the same. Liberals adopted socalism as their guiding force and socialists embraced liberalism’s modern definition.
Mitt Romney is a self-admitted Progressive. What differences?
More “lesser evil” nonsense.
I don’t care about party, if they are not conservative do not vote for them
Lesser and greater evils are on the same side!
Maybe not much, but enough for me to believe that the US would be in much better shape today with Romney at the helm.
There isn't an electable conservative today that would meet the criteria of such a diverse group as conservatives are. There's always something wrong with someone that will keep enough conservatives at home sitting on their hands and letting a Dem win yet another election.
Jeb will do worse than Romney. The GOPe has LOST the base.
So accepting a greater evil is better.
Interesting.
