My favorite episode (to be truthful, all the episodes are very interesting) was Carmichael's seach for the Jamaican Blue Mountain Bean in Papua New Guinea. He searched up and down the mountains paying off pothole menders here and there. In the end he had to hire a bush pilot to fly to the other side of the mountain range, hitch a ride on the PNG public open trucks to find a village where the villagers cooperate and sell their coffee in bulk. You should have seen how the villagers stood around him as he roasted their beans, ground them and then taste tested. Carmichael's hands were shaking. The villagers held their breath. Carmichael slurped the coffee, shook his head, jumped up and high-fived all villagers and cut the deal. The villagers were ecstatic. He paid $100,000 for their produce.
Dammit, I was going to purchase some next week, but now PNG is all sold out. : (
Aside: Todd Carmichael (born 1963) was the first American explorer to cross Antarctica to the South Pole alone, on foot and with no assistance. He arrived at the pole on December 21, 2008, after a total travel time of 39 days, 7 hours and 49 minutes.
