“The emergency beacon came from a fishing vessel and the nature of the distress call is unknown.”

It could have been an accidental activation of an EPIRB or an actual boat in distress signal. The frequency would tell them it is not from an airplane. (EMERGENCY POSITION INDICATING RADIOBEACON) - Tom

Let me clarify that.
You could carry an 406 MHZ EPIRB on an airplane, but the last I heard Flight 370 didn't have any.
That seems odd since you would expect to have one in a life raft aboard the plane. -Tom

Yes. It has nothing to do with the plane. Referencing the plane in an article about an emergency beacon from a fishing boat in the same ocean is like mentioning a Japanese citizen that stepped on a sea urchin while talking about a shark attack off California.
