Putin's first job was teaching the East German secret police how to become more efficient torturers and snoops.
He was always evil.
The man whose main hobby was murdering Ukrainians who didn't want to be collectivized is blaming his own victims for starting the cold war.
This article is nauseating from start to finish.
“I looked the man in the eye. I found him to be very straightforward and trustworthy. We had a very good dialogue. I was able to get a sense of his soul, a man deeply committed to his country and the best interests of his country. I wouldn’t have invited him to my ranch if I didn’t trust him.” - George W. Bush
We really need to stop electing Ivy League graduates.
He saw the soul but not the flames?
And on the Supreme Court.
At the end of the day, one thing you can say about Clinton, Bush, and Obama, as they were all not nearly as smart as they think they are.
Obama is a dope in a whole different class.
Yeah that too; being a graduate of an Ivy League university doesn’t really mean anything anymore. It’s just the name and the name is losing cachet since even celebrities are getting into the Ivy League universities.
The Ukrainians killed 30,000 Russians, and in 1933 the Russians murdered millions of Ukrainians by state-sponsored starvation. Putin’s beloved communist party did that. And in those days the Guardian and the New York Times were cheering for the Soviets. So it continues.
Everyone has a soul, if GW hadn’t been such a Pollyanna he would have seen that Putin (or anyone who worked for the KGB) is not a man with any humanity in him. He’s a leader, but in the old Tsarist fashion; he’s not interested in Russia so much as he is in his own personal glory and determined to rebuild the old empire at any cost, even if it means butchering Russians through military conscription. There is no way that he’s not going to pull a Napoleon and NOT try to build his empire and crown himself emperor.
Seems he had a vendetta. All that cross-sporting was for show, apparently.
Vladimir Putin isn’t evil - he is just acting in what he perceives to be Russia’s national interests. No other Russian leader would act any differently.
Russia is our adversary because its interests don’t always coincide with ours. So we’re going to find ourselves talking - and acting past each other.
This has nothing to do with leaders’ personal chemistry, trust or whatever. It has to do with what they see as right for their country at a given time - and at such a time all other considerations are of a purely secondary nature.
For Putin - Crimea is of such great importance that it overrides friendly ties with the West.
Putin is strong and tough, but he is pushing the limits and I don’t think this time around the US (or our allies) are in any condition designed to keep him off from annexing the Ukraine or pushing other countries around.
A contact I have in Ukraine reports that some “intellectuals” in Russia are also complaining on TV about the move.
I am being old fashioned Christian about this. Putin stole a land. Might have been with next to no bloodshed but he stole it. But the worst thing, he pretended while doing it that he was right with the Lord. Nope. That’s hypocrisy of a kind that gets you quick karma from the Almighty.
The "How..." story?
I'm seeing a lot of articles lately that use this structure. It leaves the reader with the impression that the topic is already past the tipping point, a fait accompli, and that now it's time to tell the story of how it came to be.
It's just the latest form of push journalism that tries to make public opinion instead of report on public opinion, by making other think that something is settled when, in fact, it is not.

I think Putin is about to indulge in another purge.
