The flag is battle flag of the Army of Northern Virgina. I can only guess based on the kid’s quotes, but it looks like — given that “rednecks” aren’t limited to the South — that he is using as a self description. You know, like how you can call your sister a name, but you beat up the kid who calls her the same name. It’s OK when you do it. Like when black people call each other nigger.
Wonder which Confederate Flag they were referring to?

The “redneck’ word on the CSA battle flag was most likely done by someone other than the student who had it on his auto.
The War of Northern Agression was begun for economic reasons. Slavery was just used as an excuse to stir people to war.
The Northern States were into mfg., but they were producing goods already made in Europe so didn’t have a market for exporting.
The Southern States were into tobacco, hemp, cotton, etc., and had lucrative contracts with foreign countries so the South was becoming much more wealthy than the North.
Remember that abolition ONLY denied slavery in the South, While slave owners in the North (many of whom were black) could keep their slaves.
