Just had a very large violent quake here in So Cal. Scary.
It’s the big one, Elizabeth! I’m coming to join you!
I was wondering what woke me up, and I’m in Dallas!
Beats dodging tornados and lightning bolts like they get.
Give me an earthquake any day over the finger of God coming out of nowhere to crush you like an ant.
Looks like it was pretty shallow, probably why it felt so strong where I am, less than five miles from the epicenter. I have experienced every Southern California quake since Sylmar, and I can’t remember one that shook as violently as this one did.
Updated at 9:56 p.m.PDT:
Preliminary data suggests Friday nights earthquake occurred on the Puente Hills thrust fault, which stretches from the San Gabriel Valley to downtown Los Angeles and caused the 1987 Whittier Narrows earthquake.
Friday nights 5.1 earthquake hit only about 2 to 3 miles underneath the surface, which means the shaking is very concentrated in a small area, officials said.
50 years ago yesterday, I survived the big one here in Alaska (9.2)
The ground shook so hard for 5 minutes that you couldn't stand up.
I’ll take the hurricanes here in S Tex.
At least you know they’re coming and can bug out. :)
Seriously, hope you guys in S Cal stay safe.
Been there. They can have it. I’ll never forget the time I saw a piece of paper falling out of the sky and it turned out to be a full sheet of plywood.
Nah; no problem, other than you live kind of next door to the Yellowstone super volcano (had you thought of that).
You should be OK though Goldstate, it’s supposed to be kind of quiet for a few thousand more years.
Got that right, you get to the point where you don’t even feel the 3s and 4s anymore.
FRiend in Northridge didn’t even feel it.
Closest I came was working on a new building in Rancho Cucamonga,Ca. The wind was blowing so hard and steady that we could hardly see or breathe, the General Contractor wouldn't close the site until the metal Robertson decking was pulled off the second and third floors and spun around like flying guillotines. That was enough to keep me from ever wanting the real thing.
“and caused the 1987 Whittier Narrows earthquake”
That’s what I suspected. I’m around five miles from the epicenter but the Whittier fault runs near my house and the quake felt very strong, really tossed my house around.
Epicenter near Euclid and Imperial in La Habra
A friend of mine was right in the middle of the Northridge quake. After he said always keep a pair of shoes by your bed because walking barefoot through broken glass is not fun.
I am up here on our family farm but lived in Downey for 32 years befor retireing 3 years ago; my wife is still at the Downey house, she’s still to young to retire (heh, heh).
She called me about it a little while ago, said it shook pretty good for about 30 seconds or more then rolled for a while longer. No damage in the house other than a couple of scared dogs and all is well.
It’s human nature to downplay the threats that you are accustomed to experiencing. I’ve experienced very few earthquakes and none of those were all that severe, more like tremors. One a few years ago cracked my sidewalk, I guess that’s the worst one. It’s very disconcerting to us on east coast, although this area is at moderate risk from the fault zone at Charleston, SC.
You don’t ever get used to an actual tornado. You get sort of matter-of-fact about the threat of them, it becomes sort of routine after a while. But, having one on the ground nearby is a gut-wrenching thing no matter how many times you’ve experienced it. Large tornadoes are thankfully rare here, but ours tend to come at night, which adds another level of spooky to what is already a frightening thing, you can’t see it but you can hear it.
Always kept my boots right next to the bed, but then again for some reason I can’t stand walking on even a clean floor barefoot.
