#4 The 5th Dimension: Aquarius/Let the Sunshine InHair had two incarnations. The first off-Broadway version had a genuine plot, while the second Broadway version was more of a revue, with the plot playing second fiddle. It marked a major change in the American musical theater.
When the Broadway version opened, Gerome Ragni and James Rado, who were two of the three people behind the musical, came to Philadelphia, dropped in at my little college station, and I managed to tape an interview with them. Rado was a nice guy, but Ragni was put off by my ROTC uniform and acted like an asshole. Rado later apologized and said that Ragni always acted that way. When Ragnis drug use killed him in 1976, I didnt shed so much as a tear.
When the Fifth Dimensions producers recorded Aquarius, they realized that it wasnt enough for a record, so they coupled it with the finale from the musical, the chorus Let the Sunshine In.
The 5th Dimension: Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In
Here is a bonus track. I regarded the coupling of the two songs as an artistic failure. In the musical, the final song, The Flesh Failures, leads into the chorus when you least expect it, and the sudden 8-part harmony is overwhelming. My hair, which I still had then, stood up when I saw this done live. The Fifth Dimension could never get close to the original.

I did five years of college radio in Philadelphia and two years professionally in Seattle. My radio career could be summarized as a meteoric rise followed by an equally meteoric fall.

As I said last week, the hippies were hogging all the sex back then, and I never forgave them for that.
That lady out of my past (1969) and I made contact thanks to the magic of the Internet, and she spent a week and a half with me in September. It was the longest I had ever been around a hippy, and it was fun. When her son joined the Marines and her daughter joined the Air Force, it was a bitter pill for her to swallow, but she got a Marine tattoo on her back with a little Air Force flourish on it. She rolled with the punch.

I sent Ms. B a disk of all the pictures Arlene shot at my place in Georgia, but she could never get the disk to work on her computer.

Sorry to hear about the career disappointment. But nothing ventured, nothing gained. I went into music recording and song writing and eventually had to come back to my meat and potatoes which was software engineering when I exhausted my resources with little to show for it. I still do the other, but as a hobby.

Radio was 40 years ago. I spent 30 years in computers and then retired. Radio is a young man’s game.
