Archbishop of Canterbury signals end of C of E's resistance to gay marriage [UK]

The Archbishop of Canterbury has signalled that the Church of England will mount no more resistance to gay marriage among churchgoers.

Gay marriage will be legalised from Saturday with dozens of ceremonies planned around the country for one minute past midnight. This passing of the legislation caused deep rifts within the church.

"I think the church has reacted by fully accepting that it's the law, and should react on Saturday by continuing to demonstrate in word and action, the love of Christ for every human being." Justin Welby told the Guardian.

His comments mark a shift in tone, if not substance, from a letter from the bishops last month that attempted to forbid the clergy from marrying same-sex partners, and which led to a furious backlash from supporters. At least seven clergy couples are preparing to marry in defiance of their bishops, though none are known to be planning a public ceremony.

Sinners need a Church that will counsel and help to free them from their sins—not a Church that tells them, well, sinning’s OK, as long as the politicians say it is!

This is very sad. One more step down into the gutter by the Church of England.

And maybe the Archbishop should look up that verse about millstones, for those who have a duty to teach the truth and fail to do so.

The love of Christ does not extend to the sin humans commit. In fact, He wiped out a couple of rather large cities because if it.

I'm going to have to disagree with the statement as written, but that's a whole theological discussion.

To get to the point, Dad wiped out a couple of rather large cities because of it.

BTW - Justin is pretty amusing spouting off about "fully accepting that it's the law", when England's legal system is talking about accepting Sharia law, which is not known for its promoting "the love of Allah for every human being".

Wonder if Justin takes stupid pills...

Then why make the statement? Either you agree that God hates sin or you do not. The CofE has sided with man against God. I am of the opinion that this will not end well for them.

Ever hear of a Christophany?

The Church of England, born in thrall to the whims of a king, dies in thrall to the whims of the queens.

I vote for THIS as post of the day.

Jesus is definitely spewing this “church” out of His mouth. He may have already done so.

They need a SAVIOR who will do that. The church carries the message. The church does not originate it.

The difference with sodomy is that once they’re “out”, they’re loud and they’re proud-two signs of utter rebellion on the face of God. This rebellion spreads through the entire society because of the support they’re getting. Other sins don’t inspire this society-wide absolute rebellion and spitting in God’s face the way sodomy does.

I have read some articles at Berit Kjos “Crossroads” site which explain this much better than I ever can.

He also told the woman caught in adultery and about to be stoned, whom He saved, to “go and sin no more”.

This sin taps into lust in a way that isn’t even private any more. That is a recipe for a spectacular disaster.

It *can* be recovered from, but the participant has to WANT to recover. Maybe when it has descended to utter ridiculousness, we will see more wanting to do that. But even in the middle of a licentious society some catch the message of the Lord that there is a better way to live.

We have to yield to the Lord to be saved, which means embarkation on a journey upon which we will shed ALL sins. Perfection in this mortal coil, no. Agreement on the end goal, yes, yes, yes a jillion times yes.

Exactly, He said that He would never again destroy the world by water. He never said that He wouldn’t enact large-scale retribution (as during the Tribulation) in return for man’s open defiance and rebellion. Revelation gives app fractions of the numbers of people who will die during plagues and disasters during the Tribulation, and when it’s over, there won’t be many people left, comparative to the population before the Rapture and at th beginning of the Tribulation. And then Jesus, on his white horse, with the sword of His words issuing from His mouth, will kill many more who denied Him after multiple chances to receive His gift of love and repentance.

I am saddened for all of my C of E friends. Despite our differences (I’m a RC) it is a very difficult and traumatic event to see your church disintegrate. I would urge you to return to the mother Church, as many have. I will pray for all of our churches that they weather the storm with Christ’s help.

Yes, and it distorts and turns society on its head in a way that no other sin does, and in its proud rebellion, absolutely dares God to address it in a way which no other sin does, except perhaps abortion.

That’s the societal rebellion, from both sodomites and their heterosexual supporters, who are openly, publicly, and proudly shaking their fists in God’s face. Lucifer was permanently kicked out Heaven for that sin of open, defiant pride, and declared by God to be His enemy.

And it has looked to me, from perusing the Old Testament provisions, a distinction was made even then between private and notorious sin of this kind. If there were not at least two witnesses, punishment would not be exacted, and the sin would be covered by the annual atonement ceremonies.

Not to mention, I can’t recall either Israel, or true Christians after Christ’s death and resurrection, proudly proclaiming that sodomy was just another form of “love”, and that sodomites were heroes to be venerated, and that all of society should twist itself into pretzels to accomodate them and validate them and make up for their lack of true self-respect. They not only ruin their own lives, they destroy entire societies.

I don’t think you read my post. I didn’t say that the church originates the message. But, as you say, the church is supposed to carry and pass on the message. And by doing this kind of stuff, the Church of England is not only failing to do that, but is trumpeting a message that contradicts Jesus and the Bible.

That is a very serious sin on the part of the Archbishop.
