On Tuesday, Senate Democrats dropped International Monetary Fund reforms that were holding up passage of an aide package for Ukraine. Conservatives declared victory, having always viewed the inclusion of the reforms as (at best) a non sequitur, and (at worst) potentially harmful (as the New York Times reported, the reforms would have ironically given more authority to emerging economic heavyweights like China, Brazil and Russia.)
In the end, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnells prediction that the GOP-led House wouldnt pass the bill without stripping the provisions, and Secretary of State John Kerrys signaling to Majority Leader Harry Reid that it was time to move on, drove the final nails in the IMF coffin.
But it was Sen. Ted Cruz who pressed the issue and one wonders whether Republicans would have simply gone along with the Democrats had it not been for the controversial young Turk.
For those who werent paying close attention to the fight, heres a short timeline:
- On March 13, Cruz penned a letter to Harry Reid, announcing that he opposed injecting IMF governance issues into this debate, and that he intended to object to the IMF funding. Im told he asked all Republican Senators to sign, but only Senators Enzi, Lee, Paul, and Roberts agreed to sign the letter.
- Later that same day, Sen. John McCain lashed out at Senators who were holding up the bill over IMF funding, calling it a fools errand. Meanwhile, Sen. Cruz went to the Senate floor and accused Democrats of making the decision to hold Ukraine aid hostage to politics.

Cruz was the victor!! The McConnell-Reid coalition was the loser!
Yertle the turd-le was MIA. Please KY, dump this POS.
“Yertle the turd-le was MIA. Please KY, dump this POS.”
He wasn’t MIA. He was right there with Reid, undermining what Cruz was trying to do. McConnell willfully and deliberately whipped votes to help Reid get cloture. Then he pretended to be against the very provision that Cruz was railing against. And all in an attempt to put pressure on the House.
Cruz is thwarting their plans. One man. So much for the “we’re only one half of one third of the Federal Government” excuse!
Now lets hope the House kills the aid to Ukraine bill entirely. At best, it will just go to the politocrats who are running things; at worst, it will just be a further attraction for a Russian invasion.
I am so proud of Ted! I’m sorry (to Mr. Sowell), but Ted is proving to be a real warrior, a giant among mice. I know many so-called conservative pundits don’t agree with him, but there is a good reason to put up a fight. You never know when you will win, and this shows that even with a disadvantage of numbers, let the public know what is afoot and let them take it to their elected officials.
Juan is STILL a looser.
Cruz to McConnell: “Who’s your daddy?”
LOL. Love. It.
TED CRUZ for PRESIDENT! He’s the goods - let’s start raising funds for his candidacy today - tell me where to send it! We could be raising $$$$s right now, and then the GOPes would be on the DEFENSIVE!
Give em hell, Ted.
Good for Cruz! And the guys who signed on with him.
