Thre is definitely a cohort of people that have gotten used to being paid not to work. That said, a major part of the job market is filtered based upon how recently you’ve had a job, with six months, and again at a year, being significant markers.

I got fired from a job I had for 4 years because I collected unemployment during a 4 month layoff. The job was seasonal and ran from April to the end of November. I didn't collect during the layoffs in the first 3 years because the company threatened to fire me if I did. This year I had to replace my furnace at the end of December which depleted my savings. I applied for unemployment to get through the last few months of winter and they fired me for it. I was in a no win situation and needed to provide for my family. I'm hoping this winter ends soon so I can finally find a new job. I would rather have a job then collect unemployment.
