Obama Seeking to Abolish Tomahawk, Hellfire Missile Programs by Debra Heine 24 Mar 2014 947post a comment Share This: 143 281 Obama is doing that thing again that he loves to do, "which is surrender whatever advantages the country has – whichever advantages, wherever we dominate...." The president is seeking to cut two highly successful missile programs, which defense experts say have helped the U.S. Navy maintain military superiority for the past several decades. Obama's proposal they say would leave us with no functioning Tomahawk missiles past 2018.

Via the Washington Free Beacon:

The Tomahawk missile program—known as “the world’s most advanced cruise missile”—is set to be cut by $128 million under Obama’s fiscal year 2015 budget proposal and completely eliminated by fiscal year 2016, according to budget documents released by the Navy.

In addition to the monetary cuts to the program, the number of actual Tomahawk missiles acquired by the United States would drop significantly—from 196 last year to just 100 in 2015. The number will then drop to zero in 2016.

The Navy will also be forced to cancel its acquisition of the well-regarded and highly effective Hellfire missiles in 2015, according to Obama’s proposal.

The proposed elimination of these missile programs came as a shock to lawmakers and military experts, who warned ending cutting these missiles would significantly erode America’s ability to deter enemy forces.

Yeah. . .but with the SASC/HASC and HAC-D and SAC-D still waiting for their chop before sending to the full House and Senate for their vote, and the conference committee actions to follow to resolve House and Senate differences, and with union employees and their jobs under threat. . .this is a far from done deal.

Really. Far.

And that half plus most of the other half have no clue about how budgets are made and passed.

This is the PB submitted to Congress. . .and this generates all sorts of congressional actions and wheeling and dealing. . .see my previous post.

Correct, new generations of stuff is what is being funded. LRASM & JAGM. These stories are just trolling people.

Thanks. But, in our defense, this is Obama, so you never know.

Could you elaborate?

As with all weapon systems, there is always an ongoing battle between suppliers with competing platforms. Tomahawk is a "brand"... The military has been pushing a new generation program called LRASM (Long Range Air to Surface Missle) which is/was an open competition to who will supply that missle function going forward. Tomahawk II was one of the competitors.. There are other competing vendors and brands. Around 2 thousand LRAMS are budgeted to come online as the Tomahawks run out.

Same with Hellfire. There is a new generation program for that type of missle underway (JAGM, Joint Air to Ground Missle). It looks like a variation of Hellfire will win that competition. The military is just moving away from the existing brand names to new products identified by their boring internal monikers. LRASM and JAGM.

Again, affirmative action will not work with on-the-job-training. A jackass will remain a jackass.

Both systems, as you argue, are being replaced by follow on systems. But, they are all still on paper.

Isn't that the big argument about the F-35? Base a large strategic decision on something that hasn't proven itself yet?

They didn’t replace the space shuttle, now we are dependent on a hostile Russia to place and retrieve our astronauts. I doubt we can expect anything different this time.

I am with you. I want replacements in place before getting ride of the old stuff. This is too much like Space Shuttle part 2.

Yes, and meanwhile the air refueling fleet is 20 years overdue for replacement, the Raptor procurement was cut to the point of being ineffective, the Navy carrier groups are cut to less than a three ocean or two ocean capability, the nuclear warhead stockpile is inadequate, tank development has virtually stagnated, and the combat brigades have practically become a constabulary force.

Hoping to leave us more vulnerable and defenseless against enemy assault as part of the change Obama promised to bring.
