Fred Phelps, a former street preacher who led a family ministry that raged against what he perceived as a morally bankrupt society, died Thursday. His legacy of picketing funerals of military veterans and disaster victims, promoting coarse language to condemn conduct he viewed as amoral, and waging legal battles that protected his actions under the First Amendment, earned him an international reputation of a mans whose absolute conviction was never swayed in the face of widespread contempt.
The level of his vitriol, the savageness of his comments, were just unmatched anywhere. His rhetoric was such he united people both on the far left to the far right in opposition to him and his message, says Mark Potok, a senior fellow at the Southern Poverty Law Center in Montgomery, Ala.
The organization, which tracks hate groups across the US, dubbed the Westboro Baptist Church, which Phelps founded in 1955, arguably the most obnoxious and rabid hate group in America.

Best thing to do to attention whores, ignore them.
Even the opening statement is wrong. Phelps didn’t protest against a morally bankrupt society, he and his inbred retard family did everything they could to take a big steaming dump on America. I’m glad the miserable old coot is dead.
Since i am on dialysis, I will show up with a 5 gallon can of gasoline, nah screw that grade A rocket fuel!!!
Too bad Phelps won’t notice it.
I would put his bones in low Earth Orbit.
Hydrazine anyone?
Tragic death? Yes, indeed! His actions seem to indicate a non-saved person. If he was not saved (only God knows) and died in that state, it was indeed tragic.
One was absolutely NO mention of how connected he was to Al Gore and the Democrat Party through the late 80s and even into the 90s when he attended the Clinton inauguration. Remember that this type of hatred had its home in the Democrat Party for years. Now they want to whitewash that.
Second, the press and "experts" they interviewed can't help trying to suggest that a lot of other conservative Christians hold his beliefs:
If you took away [Westboros] flamboyant style, youd find that quite a lot of people share their point of view, to a fair extent"
Yeah, right.
I think Phelps really was an atheist, who used his “Church” to give Christians and anti-sodomites a black eye....and the media cooperated with him in this farce.
These guys were nothing more than a little cult, had people just ignored them from the outset they'd have just imploded and gone away. My guess is the reason that didn't happen is the leftist media always wanted to connect them to the religious right and/or attempt to make actual Christians look bad.
Fred Phelps was a Civil Rights lawyer before he started his preacher act- and the entire church thing may well have been an act.
Gotta love that they use a hate group SPLC to counter another hate group!
It lead to a more pro-sodomite world, that’s for sure.
Just like Jim Jones, sans Kool-Aid.
And yet I will pray that God have mercy on his soul and give him a seat in paradise. How messed up is that?
I’ll buy that!
