A PRECURSOR TO GREATNESS – Holy Mackerel: “Bitter Honey”

Back when I did the songbook of Paul Williams, I mentioned how he and Roger Nichols took the route of performing their own material to put it before the people who ran the record industry. The group known as Roger Nichols & Friends recorded out of A&M Records and didn’t gain much traction. Paul Williams then went and formed Holy Mackerel, recording an album at Warner Brothers that was produced by Richard Perry before he gained fame with Barbra Streisand. This disk has a lot of good Paul Williams material and is produced with style. It’s the first time Williams’ voice was heard on lead vocal, and it’s a great, catchy tune, which still holds well with age. It should have been a hit. Note that the title on the video is incorrect.

I like Paul Williams' 1949 hit Hucklebuck.
