There were plenty of Iranian students in the US when the Shah was deposed. They marched on Washington, and they remained vocal in the US even while Americans were being held hostage in their country. Plenty of terrorists have been educated in the US. The idea that familiarity ‘prevents’ contempt has been proved not to work.

I was at Laughlin AFB, TX when that happened. We had quite a few Iranian Air Force guys in pilot training at that time. When the Iranians took the hostages in 79, USAF took all of them out of pilot training. BTW, this was how I knew the Iranians would not be a factor in any future conflict. They could not fly airplanes, if their lives depended on it.
