DETROIT - Restructuring consultants have recommended that Detroit increase its parking fines for the first time since 2001 and crack down harder on people who don't pay to boost revenue for the bankrupt city.
Detroit Chief Operating Officer Gary Brown is advocating for the changes, which he says would bring in an additional $6 million per year.
"We're a city that needs every dime that we can find. So, we're going to use every avenue we can to collect revenue," Brown said.

If anyone has three unpaid tickets, they won't be able to renew.
That makes some sense. Part of the problem was that tickets were simply ignored in the first place.

Good grief. As if draining income from the impoverished residents who are still living in this miserable city is sustainable.
Behold the bounty that is liberalism.

There is no future for Detroit which doesn’t involve fewer welfare recipients and more taxpayers.

I think I would write off tickets over 10 years old as a loss and raise the fines going forward while taking licenses from repeat offenders.
After all the tickets were written and ignored because they were meaningless.

I suppose. For a city desperately trying to get people to visit, and spend, having tickets that costly doesn't seem like a very plausible strategy. It would be interesting to know just what percentage of parking meters work in the city. Not keeping them repaired is an old and well known method for generating income.
Detroit's revenue problems won't be mitigated by anything in this article. The rot is far too advanced. I wish them the best, but they sealed their fate long ago.
