York is a modest little city in Southern Pennsylvania not too far from Baltimore and right in the heart of Dutch country. It's not the sort of place where political revolutions are found.
But Republican state Senate nominee Ron Miller may think differently this morning because he just lost a special election to a write-in Tea Party candidate, Scott Wagner.
"With 100 percent of precincts reporting Tuesday night, write-in votes totaled 10,595, or 47.7 percent, to Miller's 5,920, or 26.6 percent. Democrat Linda Small of New Freedom nearly edged out Miller with 5,704 votes, for 25.7 percent," according to the York Dispatch.
Pennsylvania is a place where it can sometimes be difficult to tell the Democrats from the Republicans, at least at the state level.
Wagner, who owns a trash compactor business, ran on a typical Tea Party small-government/fiscal conservativism ticket.
He attributed his win in great part to the relentlessly negative attacks on him by the local and state GOP party establishments.
It's only a state Senate race and maybe it's just an outlier. But what if it's not? What if the VIP lesson here is what happens to the GOP when it doesn't run on an explicitly limited government/fiscal conservatism Tea Party type platform?
There's already a party of government, the Democrats. The York happening may herald the first small sign of the birth of a new party of freedom, the Tea Party.
The odd man out here is a GOP that merely offers a pale imitation of the real thing from Democrats. That sort of GOP is a party with no future.
“He attributed his win in great part to the relentlessly negative attacks on him by the local and state GOP party establishments.”
Oh, this article is a VERY good read! TY for posting it!
Pennsylvania Ping!
As I was reading it was like a breath of fresh air. Exhilarating!
Ba but but but the Tea Party is dead. That’s what the propagandists in the media attempt to convince us. The really racist media has spent 5 years intentionally portraying the TP as racists, while the GOP establishment has done everything possible to kick them under the bus.
I love York!
Great little town.
Harley Davidson has a real kewel museum there.
Me and a team of sales and engineering sold York Air Conditioning, which was owned by some other conglomerate at the time.
There is a restaurant called “Famous” Hot Dogs there. Whenever I stopped in town, I’d eat just because and I don’t even like Hot Dogs but, these things are great!
The oldest fair in the USA is in York. I believe the second oldest is in Harrisburg.
Beautiful area...
Excellent. Take that Mitch.
Well, that's not entirely true...
Free America stick it to the democrat party.
But thanks to the Malaysian plane news spamming all media, nobody will ever know about this. The fact that a write-in campaign can produce a winner is monumentally encouraging and food for thought. It must be considered on a national level.
This is awesome. Thanks for posting it!
Fixed it!
The ads were pathetic. I can get a York based talk radio station where I live. I had no idea who Scott Wagner was when I heard the ads. It was all “Millionaire Garbageman Scott Wagner” and another one about how he cut off service to some old lady (Who it turns out forgot to pay her bill for five years.
I was thoroughly disgusted when I heard the ads were sponsored by the Republican Candidate.
Congratulations to Scott Wagner.
Great news and he won as a write in.
With the David Jolly win in FL and now Wagner’s in PA it just may a harbinger of what’s to come. Dems can’t be happy.
Neither are some Republicans. :)
Absolutely, I thought that right after I posted. :-)
Rob Gleason’s handpicked candidate got his clock cleaned.
Gleason and his goons tried every dirty trick they could think of and spent a ton of money.
Wagner still won hands down by a 2 to 1 vote margin! All it took was hard work and an unflinching limited government/fiscal conservative message.
It was the perfect model of what a disciplined TEA Party candidate can achieve.
I know nothing of this race, but it’s likely less of “run as a Conservative and win” and more of “run as a qualified and compelling candidate and win.”
There will be more stories like this as the Tea Party matures and vets their candidates more closely.
excellent.
may the trend of write-in conservatives keep going.
and may they not turn to wusses and compromisers, ever. they were elected TO FIGHT and WIN, not cave in and get along. If they really want to win they will have to realize the other side isn’t going to like them or get along with them. Don’t give a sh1t about your sworn enemies. Defeat them. That’s how the left is. That’s how they have continually shifted everything leftwards using incrementalism (ie the hegelian dialectic).
