You are doing it right. I try to reserve "nasty" for those more interested in winning than substantive debate, or in this case, justifying past actions.
However, I would be remiss if I didn't ask: do you, or did you, hold a full time job while parenting your daughter?

Why have we verbed the noun “parent”?
“Bringing up” (or training up) was the old terminology. And better. Because it reminded of the direction in which the action should lead. UP. Not DOWN.
