Russia and Crimea have signed treaty of accession of the Republic of Crimea and Sevastopol in the Russian Federation following President Putin’s address to the Parliament.

Russia’s President Vladimir Putin requests parliament to ratify the agreement that would see both Crimea and the city of Sevastopol joining Russia.

“I ask you to consider the adoption of two new subjects of the Federation: Republic of Crimea and Sevastopol,” Putin told Parliamentarians.

Crimea was represented by Prime Minister Sergey Aksenov and Sevastopol mayor Aleksey Chaly, who signed the treaty. The two were accompanied by Crimean top official Vladimir Konstantinov.

“Since the adoption of the Russian Federation Republic of Crimea in structure of the Russian Federation two new entities - of the Republic of Crimea and the city of Federal importance Sevastopol – have been created,” the text of the treaty reads.

RIA Novosti / Sergey Gumeev

The Treaty enumerates 10 articles which will come into effect after ratification.

Russia will guarantee that the people who live in Crimea and Sevastopol will be given the right to keep their native language as well as the means and conditions for learning it.

Thus, article 3 of the treaty stands that there will be three official languages in Crimea and Sevastopol: Ukrainian, Russian and the language of Crimean Tatars.

Starting from the day of accession, the people of Crimea and Sevastopol are considered as Russian citizens, according to Article 5.

“Check and Mate.”

On the contrary, this illegal act may result in Russia permanently losing any opportunity to possess the Crimea in the future, after Russia is forced to disgorge its illegal conquest. It may also mean anyone who voluntarily accepted Russian citizenship in the Crimea may one day find themselves no longer permitted to reside in a Crimea restored to Ukrainian control.

“after Russia is forced to disgorge its illegal conquest.”

I’ll be sure to tell that to the Turkish Empire...

“I’ll be sure to tell that to the Turkish Empire...”

Please do so, because Turkey has recently responded to Russia’s apparent violation of the old treaty which gave Turkey certain first rights to regain sovereignty over the Crimea if and when the status of the Crimea were changed like the present circumstances.

And just who is gonna force Russia to back down. The paper tiger we have sitting in the White House.

Its over a huge portion of Crimea voted to become Russian. Russia accepted.

The Fat lady is singing.

Putin is licking his chops looking for more territory.

I will have to say do you really blame him.

Another recent thread is suggesting that Turkey might close the Bosphorus to Russia.

Yes, just posted on it. This is just the beginning of the consequences for Russia. Russia will of course retaliate, but Russia would inevitably have done so anyway in one of the upcoming and inevitable confrontations over the other former Soviet Socialist Republics Putin seeks to reconquer.

Great, then NATO gets sucked into a war with the Russians for the frickin’ Turks.

I hope the Russkies march into Istanbul and rename it back to Constantinople.

It's an interesting thought exercise as to how you'd do that in the 21st century. No one has had to "break through" someone else's straights in forever.

No way the US would go to war with Russia over Turkey. I always thought having Turkey in NATO was a stupid idea.

And how do you propose to reverse it?

Some people have taken leave of their senses. This is a nuclear superpower. It can do what it wants on its own territory.

Deal with it.

“Russia permanently losing any opportunity to possess the Crimea in the future, after Russia is forced to disgorge its illegal conquest.”

Actually, it was taken from Russia so this is the return of Crimea to its rightful owner.

“And how do you propose to reverse it?”

In the same ways in which the Soviet empire was reversed. Without the revenues from Gazprom and associated properties, Putin’s regime will dry up and be blown away by the Russian powerbrokers, and Putin knows it.

“Some people have taken leave of their senses.”

Yes, people like you and Putin who respect no boundaries and are willing to lie and obfuscate to evade accountability for the crimes of Putin’s regime.

“This is a nuclear superpower. It can do what it wants on its own territory.”

The Crimea, Ukraine, and other former Soviet Socialist Republics are not Russia’s territories. Putin’s Russian regime is flagrantly violating international law and committing crimes agaisnt humanity. Sooner or later putin and Russia will face an accounting for these criminal acts.

“Deal with it.”

It will be dealt with. Your disinformation will also be confronted.

Ukraine, with Crimea attached, became an independent nation a quarter of a century ago. What took your Russian friends so long to stake their claim?

That was a rhetorical question, BTW.
