Two people were killed and one was critically injured when a news helicopter crashed and burned Tuesday morning on Broad Street only yards away from the Space Needle.
Emergency personnel immediately rushed to the scene.
Two cars were struck in the crash. One man could be seen running from from one of the cars with his sleeve on fire, and he was extinguished by officers at the scene.

Very crowded down there. Almost better to auto into the cold water, if it was an auto-rotatable emergency.
The KOMO helipad is atop their building. Whatever happened must’ve occurred at liftoff. The crash site is only a few yards away from the KOMO studios. People in the building saw it fall right past their windows. They aren’t anywhere near the Sound.
Horrible..news said it crashed right after takeoff.
Another report says they were coming in for a landing and hit the building. Not much you can do then.
excuse me???
Creepy thing is that I have to fly down and around Seattle today....in a helicopter.
Creepy thing is to have to go anywhere near Seattle at any time.
Frisco North!
Geez...dogs weren't enough for them...(who writes this crap?)
“Creepy thing is to have to go anywhere near Seattle at any time.”
Agreed. If it can be imagined, Portland, OR is even creepier.
Imagine explaining this to your auto insurance agent!
What makes me cringe is that the folks at KOMO are having to report this. I’ve been listening...they’re in shock.
The gal at KING 5 was breaking down, too. Friends have been killed. Prayers up.
An eyewitness who works construction and watches this helo takeoff and land every day said that the helo made a landing, stayed on the pad for about two minutes, and then started taking off.
He said that the helo didn’t sound right almost from the beginning and the pilot bailed the helo into the lawn on the South side of the Pacfic Science Center, West of the Space Needle.
The helo didn’t quite make the lawn, having been caught by trees that line the sidewalk on both sides of the street. The helo landed on a small blue passenger car and a white pickup truck. One person in the pickup managed to escape. What happened to the occupants of either the small blue car or the helo is unknown publicly, probably awaiting notification.
SFD is rolling the hoses as we speak. The bodies are still on the lawn.
Could have been worse. Pilot did a great job limiting the possible damage. The lawn is essentially the only practical place to ditch the aircraft with the fewest possible casualties. The monorail track lies to the West, the news building is to the South, Space Needle to the East.
It’s early in the day. The crash happened around 7:20 AM Pacific today.
Absolutely. What a horrible thing to witness.
Prayers up indeed,
