Bede in his History of the English Church and People, finished in the 730s, says there are no snakes in Ireland and that if one is on a ship coming to Ireland, it dies as soon as it smells the air from the island. He says nothing about St. Patrick driving the snakes out of Ireland.

That would be an interesting test on snakes. To see if Irish air kills them.
