MH370 flew as low as 1,500m to avoid detection, says paper

As the search for the missing flight MH370 enters its 10th day with few clues as to its whereabouts, the New Straits Times said today the Boeing 777-200ER dropped 5,000 feet (1,500m) to evade commercial radar detection.

In an exclusive story, the government-backed paper said investigators analysing MH370’s flight data revealed that the 200-tonne, fully laden twinjet descended 1,500m or even lower to evade commercial (secondary) radar coverage after it turned back from its flight path en route to Beijing.

Investigators poring over MH370’s flight data had said the plane had flown low and used “terrain masking” as it flew over the Bay of Bengal and headed north towards land, the NST reported.

“Terrain masking” refers to an ability to position an aircraft so there is natural earth hiding it from the radio waves sent from the radar system. It is a technique mostly used in aerial combat where military pilots would fly at extremely low elevations upon normally hilly or mountainous terrain to “mask” their approach.

Experts said flying a Boeing 777 in such a way would be dangerous, stressing the airframe and possibly causing those on board to be air sick and suffer from spatial disorientation.

Been asking the same thing myself.

I would think, if they are damned important, they would be located where you can’t reach em, in flight....

One of the best scenes in latest Clancy book, about Russian invasion of Ukraine, is scene where recon helicopters fly so low that those watching them are not even sure what they are. One even turns in to a parking lot.

Satellite ping says the plane is very far from both the Straits and from the Bay of Bengal. And it came when there only was about 20 minutes fuel left, or so we're told. So why are we searching the Bay? Is this just an excuse for Obama to expend our sonar bouy supply?

Search the two arcs, or in the southern case, where drift would have carried debris from that arc. If you don't think the perps were nutty enough to suicide, focus on the northern arc. Between the perps' skill and the local's incompetence I wouldn't consider undetected passage north impossible and that is the only way which could endanger us. Unless it is possible to DB Cooper from a auto-piloted 777 no one is coming back from the southern arc.

why do all this if the pilot or co-pilot wanted to just off himself.

The intent was to make the plane disappear for as long as possible to prevent victim closure. Not claiming responsibility would be part of preventing closure and avoid retaliation.

I am willing tro take over world wide aviation safety.

My first change will be to remove the ability to turn off any flight tracking devices such as transponders.

And the installation of a separate self powered tracking unit in an area only accessible to crew on the ground.

My ideas are revolutionary and support my 5 million dollar a month salary demands.

Watet landing, sink, no debris. But then why no radio or sos. To many questions.

Notice that it says "dropped 5,000 feet", not "dropped TO 5000 feet",

and "descended 1,500 m", not "descended TO 1,500 m".

He didn't splash it. This pilot was/is a master - one of the best in the world with 30 years of flying experience and even a flight simulator for the 777 in his home.

He prepared for this and executed it brilliantly.

He disabled all tracking for the plane, then put the lights out and wished the passengers 'good night'.

Then he depressurized the cabin and took it up to 45,000 feet to kill everyone on board. That's why their phones continued to ring for days in their purses and pockets.

Then he went under the radar to Pakistan where he handed this plane over to Al Qaeda and rogue elements in the Pakistan army.

The plane is being stripped and turned into a flying bomb right now.

The only quesions:
Will they put a Pakistani nuke on it or just regular explosives and dirty nuke material?
What is their target? Israel? Western Europe? The USA?

Israel has already said that they are on the lookout for any rogue 777s and are on full alert until this craft is found.
But suppose a Paki F-16 or Iranian F-15 joins up with this plane and they fly together under the radar and trail a scheduled 777 flight. When they are over water, the fighter jet shoots down the 777 full of passengers and the flying bomb 777 takes its place. Transponders are reset, the jet is already repainted...
They can fly into any city in the world and survive being challenged. Nobody would know.

The blast would make 9/11 look like a tea party.

This plane did not go in the water as there were systems on board that would be activated the minute it hit the water. The system would float to the surface and broadcast the plane's location. It is unlikely they disabled this system too. If they did, they would not have had to fly for 7 hours. We know this plane flew for 7 hours, so it was not even over water by then. It continued to 'ping' a satellite - but without revealing its location.

Al Qaeda has it.
This is far from over.

Regarding my above scenario - they don't even need state support. A single rogue pilot in any fighter jet will do. Even an antique can shoot down a passenger jet.

They already found one rogue pilot to hijack his passenger jet and murder all on board.

The Pakistani military is thoroughly corrupted and in bed with Al Qaeda. They even hid Bin Laden at the gates of one of their bases for nearly a decade.

Most of their military are rogue elements.

There would of been debris and certain measures would of set off. I’m now certain this plane is being kept somewhere for nefarious reasons.

Ok, my dumb question— why are transponders so easily turned off on commercial airlines?

Because they are for use in flight. They are turned off, or standby on the ground. If you are concerned that pilots have too much access to important controls on an aircraft, that train left the station almost 111 years ago.

The Malaysia MH370 flight has probably seen more publicity than the hijackers expected. It will now be difficult to use in a terrorist attack. Difficult not impossible. Conjecture: Give it a new paint job. Put American markings on it to make it look like an American plane or even bolder, paint it to look like a US military plane. Then invader Russian airspace and have it attack Moscow.
With John Kerry’s recent bellowing of hot air over the Crimea, it could be played into the Kerry threat to Russia.

The ROP can make this jet “appear” like a military jet, like a US aircraft, and they could bomb a strategic target in Russia.

Why go after Israel when they can make Russia launch nukes in retaliation against America?

Its a long shot but then again the Russians are on a hair trigger, they will believe any story, that the Malaysian pilot is actually CIA.Question is, have the Russians considered this possibility?

Why are you pushing that it crashed so hard? Nobody is buying that anymore, Israel is stepping up security.

-— Why is the airframe stressed? At a low altitude, the cabin is barely pressurized. -—

Force equals mass times acceleration. Rapid changes in altitude represent high acceleration. And planes are built with a low factor of safety.

“I would think, if they are damned important, they would be located where you can’t reach em, in flight....”

I guess one reason to be able to turn them off might be if someone were using your transponder signal to get a lock for a missile strike on you, etc.

Do their ICBM still work, or do they look like the Russian submarine fleet...rusty hulks, being cut up for scrap?
