Polling stations in Crimea have closed, the referendum is over. According to the exit polls, 93 percent of people voted for Crimea's accession to Russia at the referendum.
A total of 93 percent of residents of Crimea voted for joining Russia at a referendum on Sunday, an exit poll publicized by the Rossiya 24 TV channel shows.
Seven percent of Crimeans favored being a part of Ukraine, it shows. The voter turnout exceeded 80 percent, the Crimean News Agency reported.
The voting ended at 20:00 pm local time. Crimeans were able to cast votes at 1,205 polling station. Read more: http://voiceofrussia.com/news/2014_03_16/93-of-voters-suppport-Crimeas-accession-to-Russia-exit-polls-8596/
Too bad they did so poorly compared to the precincts in America that voted 100% for Obama in 2012.
At the time Singapore became independent, it was universally believed that it would quickly become a failed state.
All the vote did today was reverse Nikita Khruschev’s 60 year old “gift” of Crimea to Ukraine.
Its the final codicil to the disappearance of the USSR - and Russia resumes its sovereignty over the peninsula - with the expressed consent of its inhabitants.
Ukrainian nationalists should be happy Crimea is no longer a means by which Russia can make Ukraine’s life miserable. They should look at the Crimean reversion to Russian rule as a blessing in disguise.
And mirabile dictu it did not. It became an envy, if a somewhat tyrannically run one.
It was not 183%? Man, the Russian propaganda machine is not what it used to be. They should call our LSM for some refresher courses...
If true then it mostly hurt Ukraine’s feelings. But still. Will the Bear be happy with this? Has it shaken off that old USSR grumpiness?
Putin can’t ladle the gravy as well as Baraq, LOL
When Crimea was transferred to Ukraine, both Russia and Ukraine were part of USSR.
So it was sort of like transferring the UP of Michigan to Wisconsin. Nobody at the time thought it was particularly important.
If they had, the transfer would probably never have taken place.
It should also be noted that the inhabitants did not freely decide to become Ukrainians. IOW, this reaccession to Russia has arguably more democratic and electoral legitimacy than the earlier transfer to Ukraine.
Mmmmhmmm. And any believers of that poll ... wanna buy a bridge?
The Tatars boycotted.
I think Yoopers would be quite upset to find themselves Wisconsinites.
And anyhow Russia was the center of this mess and the whole thing was often called “Russia.”
Plus Crimea gets a President for Life thrown in with their vote today. No need for anymore votes.
Singapore is ranked #2 in the world for economic freedom.
Arguably, their economic freedom would diminish if political freedom and other individual rights were permitted.
USA is #12, BTW.

Nobody asked Yoopers what they wanted, anymore than people living in Crimea were asked if they wanted to be part of Ukraine.
If one just wants to see it as a business center and not as a place to live, I guess so.
Forget their (in)famous canings, they were badgering Singaporeans to marry and other stuff that even Michelle Obama never thought of.
Those reports prove the election was massively rigged by Putin’s Russian regime, because the demographics alone make such an election result quite impossible. The Ukrainians make up something on the order of more than 25 percent of the population and the Crimean Tatars more than 12 percent of the population. The ethnic Russians are fewer than 58 percent of the population. Many ethnic Russians in the Crimea were loyal to the Ukraine and wanted to have nothing to do with Putin’s autocratic Russian government. At the very most a fair election result would have seen no more than a 45 percent vote in favor of annexing to Russia, and a far more likely result would have been around 9 to 12 percent in favor of Russian annexation.
Another way of knowing with absolute certainty the voting was rigged and fraudulent is by looking at the ballots. The ballots presented the voter with only two choices. One choice was for the Crimea to declare independence from the Ukraine. The other choice was for the Crimea to declare independence from the Ukraine and request Russian to annex the Crimea to Russia. The faked vote chose to become annexed to Russia. Nowhere on the ballot was there any option to vote in favor of remaining the territory of the Ukraine.
Everybody knew Russia was running the show. It would be like giving a piece of DC to Maryland or Virginia. Then welshing on it.
Yup. The voters decided that and we can argue til we’re blue in the face whether this referendum should have been held under other circumstances.
Nevertheless, the result represents a new geopolitical reality. Whether Kiev and the West come to terms with it is their problem. But its clear Crimea is gone to Russia for good now.
Problem too with Caleeeforneeea that isn’t often mentioned is that its many cities and towns were founded with spanish names. Los Angeles, Santa Cruz, San Rafael etc...
so the south of the border types have a natural affinity to be associated with it. Of course there are other factors but this is a factor IMO —albeit not the major one for illegals.
