The pilot was clearly obsessed with not being detected. He may have wanted the legendary mystery status of Amelia Earhart.
The pilot was irrational, but highly organized. His goal was to never be found. If you layout the southern route, they ditch near the Diamantina Deep at 26,000 feet deep.
