The only thing that came off was a couple of feet of horizontal stabilizer. It was back in service a week later. I have always wanted to see a computer generated re-enactment of how the plane was flown. That must have been some ride. The pilot, wounded as he was, flew it like a fighter jet, like the ones he flew in the service. To fly a fully loaded DC-10 like a F-16 was one hell of a job.
