Russia claims it caught a US intelligence drone in Crimea, an autonomous republic of Ukraine. Rostec, a Russian state-owned corporation, brought it down electronically.
"The drone was flying at about 4,000 metres (12,000 feet) and was virtually invisible from the ground. It was possible to break the link with US operators with complex radio-electronic" technology, said Rostec in a statement.
Russia is in full control of Crimea. The peninsula is holding a referendum on Sunday when the residents will choose to stay with Ukraine or join the Russian Federation. The vote is expected to go in Russias favor since over 58% of the population are ethnic Russians. Pro-Russians and Russian forces took over many locations in Crimea, including the airport.
They cancelled all flights at the airport except for those to and from Moscow.
Rostec said these pro-Russians almost captured the drone, but confirmed it was their company which took it down.
They did not say who or what was operating the aircraft. Rostec did release details of the drone: "Judging by its identification number, UAV MQ-5B belonged to the 66th American Reconnaissance Brigade, based in Bavaria," Rostec said on its website, which also carried a picture of what it said was the captured drone. Secretary of State John Kerry met with Russia Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in London in a last-minute attempt to stop the referendum and put an end to the crisis.
Nothing was accomplished, but Kerry said the US will not recognize the referendum and promised more sanctions against Russia if it uses the votes to justify more aggression against Ukraine.

What was Harry Reid doing flying over Crimea?
Good Grief! Does the USA not have a self destruct mechanism on these things!
Iran now Russia!
More properly, the drone was tribute.
This is the total stupidity of military planers talking about going all or most all drones..any half sophisticated foe can jam the data link..an then you have a useless multi million dollar weapon system
Mexico already occupies Aztlan, Holder is putting down the remaining Resistance as we speak.
I personally would be delighted if Mexico would agree to take back California. I would throw in New Mexico to sweeten the deal.
A trick they learned from Iran.
You're on your own man. If we're giving them away I'm taking anything I can grabs for myself.
Unless they return it, that’s a hostile act against the United States. We should arrest a few of their diplomats, cut off their financial access to our country, and put missile defense in Eastern Europe.
What was the problem with Hitler taking Austria?
And those people you dislike would then move to other states. They want the resources and benefits of those states. Eventually it would be your state.
Was the drone controlling a Boeing 777, by any chance?
Maybe we need to give them Georgia instead?
I know...let’s not give them anything, except a secure border between us.
Obama ‘s giving away FREE DRONES..... what a nice guy..
I am an engineer and ask, Why is there not a “return home” automated flight plan loaded into the drone for every mission?
If the radio signal to the real pilots on the ground is lost or can’t be re-authenticated. These drones need to shift into an automation mode where they don’t rely on ground signals.
Special Delivery.
Love, 0.
P.S. Let us know if you need anything else.
XOXO
”since over 58% of the population are ethnic Russians”
“If this is true, what is our BEEF?”
What, indeed?
2001 The last census of the population in Crimea (could have changed in 13 years):
Total population - 2,401,200
60.4% Russians,
24.0% Ukrainians,
10.2% Crimean Tatars,
1.5% Belarusians,
0.6% Tatars,
0.4% Armenians,
0.2% each of Jews, Poles, Moldovans and Azeris
79% of Crimean inhabitants named Russian as their native language, 11% the Crimean Tatar language and only 10% Ukrainian.
From the Russian perspective, you were cool with US taking Northern Mexico, but they’re being called out for going into a neighboring territory that is strategic to them. And, was recently within their sovereign territory. California’s Sebastopol has always been taught as as being a namesake for a Russian city not Ukrainian. 19th Century Russians ventured as far as Sonoma County on the Pacific coast.
