I very much appreciate the news being posted. It can be taken for granted that ALL “news” on Ukraine (or just about anything) is slanted from every single source; some more and some less.
Caww and others like Marguerite are not taking the Russian side. It amazes me that so many here are so wilfully blind that they can’t stand news that doesn’t support their own biases. That’s not what FR used to be. Caww and others did a heroic job when the Tamarod rebellion was active in Egypt - an incredible job.
There is NO “good” side in the Ukraine situation, except the people who you never read about, who are victims. Reminds me of Treebeard, when asked whose side he was on:
“I’m not on anyone’s side, because no one is on my side.”
What is important is truth; whether it supports peoples’ fondly held biases or not.
You’d listen to Goebbels and say you were in search of the truth. Putin and his news media exist not to tell the truth but to conduct propaganda campaigns.
Nonsense. We are talking about a protest in which Pro-Moscow "demonstrators" broke through a police barricade and killed someone, not to mention the injuries. And we have people on here declaring that, 'Well, they had it coming" and "well, they were on THEIR 'turf'". This is nonsense and a celebration of criminal behavior. You don't need to be pro or anti Russian dictatorship to appreciate the vileness of such a declaration. I don't care if it is an Pro-Obama protestor carrying an abortion sign infront of a bunch of conservatives. You will NOT hear me justifying one group pushing through cops and killing people!
I’ll also add that these “Pro-Russian Demonstrators” might not have even been from Ukraine at all, as Putin has been bussing people in from Russia for awhile now; and these freaks, who were celebrating beneath a statue of Lenin, allegedly have the accent of the Russian speakers of Russia proper.

I’ve been always taking the side of the TRUTH. As the saying goes “Facts are stubborn”. The truth is misrepresented in the West and East political and media propaganda since ... ever. One can find it in the ancient Egypt reporting of Ramses war with the Hittites and Herodot’s writings ... In order to find it, one must read and recoup stark facts and data from ALL sides.
I don’t believe in the manicheism approach “we good, them bad” and vice-versa. In my lifetime I’ve witnessed enough occurences when the bad side ended being the good and the good much more bad than the bad.
I’m sorry to realise that some FReepers are stuck in the past and the Cold war hysterical propaganda. For decades we’ve been told that the Soviet Union will attack the West. IT NEVER HAPPENED. The Soviet Union is no more, Russia is not Soviet Union, and Putin is neither Hitler, nor Stalin. He’s a tough leader of a huge country, and he considers First his country’s interst.
The unrest and the coup d’état in Kiev put in jeopardy the sort of Russia’s navy bases in the Black Sea and he’s been securing it! The US would do the same if the same happened to one of its military base. Besides, Ukraine, a multinational country is on Russia’s turf, not the United States’. The better thing is that the US and Russia mind their own business and not interfere in each other’s side of the Atlantic pond.
