Australia: Drone 'used to carry drugs near prison'
BBC ^ | March 10, 2014 | Unattributed

A man has been arrested for allegedly trying to smuggle drugs into a prison using a drone, Australian police say.

The drone was "hovering in the vicinity of a prison" in Melbourne on Sunday afternoon, police said in a statement.

The drone appeared to have "four engines" and was carrying "a small quantity of drugs", police added.

Australia's parliament recently held a roundtable on drones and privacy.

During the roundtable, Brad Mason, secretary of the Australian Certified UAV Operators Association, said there was "a lot of illegal and unauthorised use of UAVs.

"We understand that the regulator is doing its best to try and combat that but, unfortunately... they are so easily available and so cheap to buy these days that anybody can buy one and anyone can go out and operate one."

Curious that the prisoner tried to smuggle in drugs rather than implements that would enable escape!

I knew this was coming, as soon as I saw a YouTube video of a nitro powered R/C heli lifting not one but two one-gallon jugs full of water.

Nah, for that, you just rent a hot air balloon like Lex Luthor in Superman II.

Things like that don't really exist.

OOPS.

The gunfire in that video was faked - it's a Call of Duty BlackOps2 "prop" that FPSRussia sort of "brought to life". The gun appears to be part of an AR-15 piston upper assembly.

This video, on the other hand...

This particular prison is one most experienced criminals are unlikely to escape from. It’s a remand centre where they are held while awaiting trial, or actually on trial, and they’d still be hoping to beat the rap and get out. Escaping means committing a crime that you are pretty much certain to go down for, if you’re recaptured.

There are plenty who would the chance to escape if it came up, but not the experienced, hardcore ones, and they are the ones who are most likely to be involved in a scheme like this.
