I suppose the only reason we haven't seen such is that the US has not faced significant aerial opposition since before the advent of the modern drone. Of course, surface to air missiles, such as the SM-2MR, are just specialized drones.

Gap, a momentary lapse would be corrected by the next sweep of the beam. Gap means no coverage at all, no radar beam from any ground based tracking site reaches the area in sufficient strength and coherency to reflect back.
For them to take over and land somewhere I doubt there would be lack of radar all the way until they landed.
Why would you doubt that, this is the 3rd world, not like switching Centers enroute in the US.
I also didn’t think a pilot could turn off transponders. Doesn’t seem like a good idea to me to allow that.
Never been a pilot, or ever worked around anything that runs off electricity? Allow? The transponder is a transceiver it receives and transmits info electronically. It runs on electricity. You would have an electrical device that is always on in an aircraft? What happens when it fails? How would you cut the power to it, or is it OK to just let it burst into flames for the sake of flight following?
An electrical fire inflight is a serious matter, Damn hard to put out and can restart at anytime if the power supply remains connected. This fire will be in the cockpit right next to the legs of one of the pilots. Do you think driving and talking on a cell phone is bad and causes distractions? Consider the effect on piloting skills with flames and electric arcs next to your leg. Sure to degrade your airmanship.

I am pretty sure intelligence agencies know exactly where this plane is, they are refusing to reveal that in order to catch more fish, to get as many terrorists as they can in one move, as far as the passengers go its in Gods hands, our christian God, not the other one.
One could speculate just how and where best to utilize a jumbo jet as a weapon of mass destruction in the name of Allah in that part of the country. Even if it just came out of the blue by now approaching any major city especially a Chinese one it would be shot down.
then again the Chinese government may have had intel that it was to be used as a 9/11 in China and Chinese well they have no value of human rights, they have three billion more, they would have shot it down at sea. It may have been a revenge act from that recent train station attack.

Except for their limited range, autonomy once launched, can't be recovered, vastly less human interface etc, they are really drone like as the military defines it drone capability

I grieve for the families of all of the passengers, the flight attendants, the pilots. Everyone on this thread seems to be flippant and making a sore joke about a real tragedy. I’m thinking that the pilots landed safely in the jungles of Viet Nam, and whatever package or people they had on board were taken to a safer place. China has been very quiet in all of this, I suspect that many NSA look alikes of other countries know exactly what has gone on. and SAD that the people who lost loved ones have to wait another day to get some good answers.

Terrorists’ actions are supposed to be terrorizing, not leave us scratching our heads. Why crash over water? What did that prove?
Stolen plane for perhaps a real terrorist attack? Plausible.
