As a mother of a both a teen daughter and son, I am much more concerned with the boys. Everything that makes them “boys” is being systematically punished. I almost see the obsession with gangster culture as a response to boys desperately searching for an outlet to express their God given need to protect and provide. It is backwards and misguided but when a vacuum opens up something will fill it. Look around at your average suburban teenage white kid and 50% of them will have multiple tattoos that look like they just got out of jail. That is a young guy screaming out to look powerful.
You called?
This statement is illustrative of female privilege in modern America.
Women are not held to the same standards of behavior as men and can get away outrageous outbursts and actions.
Here's a little secret for everyone: Leaders are born, not made. If someone is a leader, they lead and others naturally follow.
People, men and women both, will not follow someone who is dismissive, abusive or untrustworthy.
Most women do not have the demeanor for leadership, just like most men. Just turns out that more women than men lack that stable demeanor.
Put 15 girls and 15 boys on a play field and ask them to organize a team to get something, anything done. Then walk away without further direction and observe.
It'll tell you everything you need to know about our wonderful, God-given differences.
“Bossy” is the perfect word. Very few women are able to handle leadership without being overbearing and abusive. Ask any woman who works for one.
We? Who is we, Sheryl?
Very astute observation. I’m inclined to agree.
I had a bossy female boss. She was personally insulting, verbally abusive, changed her mind and demands without communicating.
Other employees would whisper things to me in the hall but I never knew the full story of how long the company had tolerated such behavior (she’d worked there for 20 years and had last had an underling 3 years prior).
She doesn’t keep it secret.
She was an Obama “bundler” in 08 and 12.
The woman who worked for my boss before I did made a lateral move to a different task/manager to survive at the company. She was unbearable to work for.
I don’t know if I agree with the born, not made view of leaders. However, most people can’t lead. I know very few people who are good leaders. I know tons of blind followers. I know many (myself included) who march to our own drums. I’ll lead if I have too, but rather just take care of my own job. (I’m boss and labor).
OK, we’ll just call them “bitchy”. Women tend to operate at an emotional level.
I had one like that almost succeed in driving me to a complete breakdown.
LOL amen
Why she was so protected, I'll never know. Then again, at a previous employer, the major company settled out of court (for millions each) TWO sexual harassment suits against the VP of Human Resources. Why he was not terminatd after several such flareups remained a mystery (he was a buddy of the CEO and reputedly being groomed for a higher position).
This nut bar was entrenched at a state university as a network administrator. She had her game down pat. Any transgression real or imagined was immediately documented. I could do no right by her no matter what anyone else said.
She issued a directive forbidding to talk unless necessary since my voice bothered somebody. I wished I got that in writing but at that time I was so out of whack, thinking straight was asking a lot.
More basically, the equivalent to "bossy" is "dictator", not "leader". The first two words mean the same thing, just in different degrees. Actual leaders can be either men or women.
I propose a 15, - no 20 yard NFL penalty for using the word “bossy”.
Mike Bossy is not amused.
