Mitch McConnell at CPAC: If you give me a Republican majority in the Senate, I won’t let you down

Spoiler alert: He’ll let us down.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell promised a ballroom full of activists Thursday that he would fight “tooth and nail” for a conservative agenda if he takes the helm of a Republican majority next year…

“If I’m given the opportunity to lead the United States Senate next year, I won’t let you down,” McConnell said. “I will lead with integrity, we will fight tooth and nail for conservative reforms that put this country back on track, we will debate our ideas openly, we will vote without fear, and we will govern with the understanding that the future of this country depends on our success.”

Oddly enough, his reception in the hall today was “lukewarm.” Serious question: What would McConnell have to do, or not do, as Senate majority leader for tea partiers to say, “He was right, he didn’t let us down”? He’ll happily hold a vote to repeal ObamaCare, which will either be filibustered by Democrats or die on Obama’s desk. He might be willing to stand his ground on spending cuts, veto or no veto. Is that good enough? Ain’t no way he’s going to shut down the government or let Treasury hit the debt ceiling, and the closer we get to 2016 the surer that is. So if that’s the litmus test, consider him having failed already.

Actually, I think there are two litmus tests, neither of which has to do with fiscal standoffs. One is on Supreme Court (or cabinet) appointments, the other is on immigration. If Obama gets a vacancy on the Court and nominates someone far enough left to alarm grassroots righties but not so far left that GOP centrists like Mark Kirk won’t vote for him/her, McConnell will face a ton of pressure to keep the nomination off the floor. I think there’s a fair chance that he’ll pass that test. In fact, Obama himself might anticipate it by nominating someone radical-ish in the expectation that he or she will be torpedoed and then nominating the person he really wanted all along as a “moderate” compromise back-up pick. On immigration, though, it’s unfathomable to me that McConnell would block an amnesty bill passed by the more conservative House, knowing that there are more than enough amnesty fans in the Senate to break a filibuster on it, purely to pander to tea partiers. The party leadership wants immigration done by the time of the next presidential election. Mitch the Knife won’t stop them. So yeah, he’ll let you down.

Here he is this morning waving a gun around onstage. I know he feels like he’s being attacked on all sides by conservatives lately, but good lord, man. (Kidding. It was a present for Tom Coburn.)

I hope nobody is buying that

Sadly, too many are, including a sizeable portion here on FreeRepublic. We see it in post after post after post, with calls for "ALL WE NEED TO DO IS TAKE OVER THE SENATE!"

Yeah, right - with Senate Majority Leader Mitch "The Turtle" McConnell...Bwa Ha Ha Ha!!!

If Mitch McConnell really wanted to do something helpful for conservatives he’d announce that he’s “served” his state and country long enough and that he’s not running for re-election and will throw his support behind Matt Bevin. I’m not holding my breath for that to happen.

Nice to see CPAC’s inclusive outreach inviting Harry Reid to speak to them.

First thing Mitch would do would do is bring back the old filibuster rules. Next, he'd bend over to treat rats to every benefit and consideration that were denied to republicans. He'd be on steroids to prove how much more 'fair' he is compared to Reid.

No sale, Mitch. YOU LIE!

Just like the one Boner has. Boner’s indicated he’ll pass amnesty even if has to do it with a majority dim supported vote. Against most of the members of his OWN party.

I will lead with integrity,

Hey you back-stabbing traitorous, Democrat Collaborating Coward, you've refused to lead with integrity up to this point, why would we believe you now?

McConnell is already on record as saying we need to wait until 2016. The GOPe won’t be vigorously opposing the Obama agenda. What they really want is the Senate majority perks. Committee chairs that get the big donations and control the pork. Oink oink, mitchy.

He would have to promise in writing in his own blood that he would keep Reid’s Nuclear Option and expand it to the Supreme Court.

But he has hinted at doing just the opposite. This is what drives me nuts about this idiot party.

Let’s not forget dishonesty, as for example voting for cloture and then voting against the bill.

I say we get a majority, veto-proof one, then put Ted Cruz as the Majority Leader, repeal Obamacare, cut income taxes, trim back welfare spending 75%, gut the EPA, and encourage competition by eliminating taxpayer subsidies for multinational corporations...no welfare for individuals, no welfare for big business.

Bada bing.

He didn't get there himself.
He doesn't belong there.
And you have to wonder what kind of idiot put him there.

The first thing Mitch McConnell did when he became Majority Leader before was to cave to the whining 'Rats and allot them more committee seats than previous (i.e. 'Rat) rules allowed. His very first action a a "leader" was to totally capitulate to Harry Reid. Reid owns Mitch.

You had it from 2004-2006 and did absolutely nothing with it.

He's hoping and working to make sure no one remembers the truth of his record.

You ought to hear the ads this creep is running this week against Bevin and the Senate Conservatives Fund. He is SLAMMING the fact his record is being called out as "Ridiculous attacks" by "extremists" and then goes on to slam Bevin's wealth and properties he owns as 'out of touch' with Kentucky values.

McConnell is BASHING Conservatives right now - THIS HOUR on the same level as we receive from the Obama-MarxoFascists.

Why CPAC allowed this Judenrat for the Marxists speak - is beyond me.
