I never saw an office supply store, but I was in a rural area.
All of mine came from Quill, or similar mail-order companies.
Anything I wanted was delivered by UPS in two days.
That’s the problem with a story like this. How much of it is because of the Obama economy, and how much is this because Amazon and others are eating Staples’ lunch?

Indeed. Online office supplies from places like ebay and amazon are 50% to 70% less expensive than B&M.
