Only because the American proxies were defeated at the Bay of Pigs. The US had every intention of "occupying" Cuba. The occupying force was to be American proxies, and not the actual American army.

Don't get me wrong. I wish the Bay of Pigs had turned out differently. The people of Cuba would have been so much better off had Castro been defeated.

It did? Then why did it abandon the anti-Communist Cubans and allow them to be defeated?

It's more like the US had ever intention of helping Castro destroy his opposition.
