BELL, Calif. — The auditorium was packed. There were single mothers, day laborers, grandparents pushing infants in strollers and teenagers interpreting for parents. All of them faced a potentially life-changing prospect: Within a year, California will start offering driver’s licenses to immigrants who are living in the country illegally.
But one person after another stepped to the microphone and expressed fear that the licenses, far from helping them, could instead be used to deport them.
Last year, when California became the most populous state to pass a law permitting undocumented residents to obtain driver’s licenses, advocates for immigrant rights were thrilled, saying it would allow people to commute without fear while also decreasing rates of hit-and-run accidents and uninsured drivers on the roads. Now those advocates are confronting another formidable obstacle: the deep and longstanding mistrust of the American government among this population.
It turns out that convincing immigrants who have spent decades avoiding the authorities to willingly hand over their names, addresses and photographs to the government is no easy sell — particularly since the licenses will look different from regular ones, in ways that have yet to be determined.

Good one, California, good one. Driving illegals underground and into the dark. Making them feel like they can’t come into the light and be part of the population. Ya know, intimidating them and making them fear the authorities.
If illegals do not trust the Government, why should I? If the illegals trusted the Government, I would not trust them anyway (Gov or illegals)

They should have done what my parents did...immigrate legally from their home country. My parents never had to look over their shoulder or worry about being stopped by the police. My parents also took the time to learn English so that they weren’t lost in a new world. But I guess that’s the old fashioned way of doing things.

Why should an illegal alien in California get a drivers license? If they get pulled over by a cop on California the rule of the four no’s apply:
No drivers license
No registration
No insurance
No hay problema, hasta la vista amigo.
Funny. I could tell you countless stories told to me within the past week by my buddy LAPD cop where they were at crash sites in Socal and they just let the mexiclowns walk, even as they are illegals.
The irony is that the illegals actually APPLYING for driver’s licenses when it’s better to have none and not pay insurance.
Personally, I think gun owners have more to worry about...

Plus sophisticated computer mining programs can uncover the same illegal using multiple licenses under several identities----all collecting US govt freebies.
