Watch Outraged Citizens Excoriate City School Superintendent Over $600,000 Salary
Independent Journal ^ | 26 February 2014

In another example of local city officials grossly abusing government funds, the Centinela School District Superintendent was berated by justifiably angry citizens over his enormous salary.

The small California community has been shocked to discover that in addition to the $663,000 compensation package granted to Jose Fernandez, he also received a monumental loan from the school district of $900,000 at 2 percent interest over 40 years, even though he had already declared bankruptcy twice!

Unfortunately, there is no indication that any illegal act was committed, and shockingly, the superintendent actually defends his salary, saying he took over a district that had facilities “similar to Haiti.” The district includes only three High Schools, with about 6,500 students.

Makes you wonder how many other cities have such officials cashing in at the expense of their constituents’ well-being.

Has none of these citizens attended a school board meeting?

You could eliminate 90% of the headcount of any school administration and not skip a beat.

Sounds like their issue is with the school board or other body that is responsible for the fiscal concerns of the district.
If the guy is living up to his side of the agreement, then the district should live up to theirs.

Unfortunately? Why do people always want to see people in trouble. Good that the guy stayed above board. All these stories are BS. The guy was hired and this is what he is given. What they need to do is change the rules for the next person in the job. Of course it will be a woman and they will complain about how woman make less money. We can't win.

When people talk about “investing in education,” this is where the money goes.

I’m just sick of people being outraged about things they allow to happen.

I see the same thing locally. People are complaining about the passage of a millage that raised taxes for the school district but only a few dozen people bothered to vote aside from virtually every school employee.

From the article.

“Rojas, Rocio Pizano, Gloria Ramos and President Maritza Molina — were on the panel that unanimously approved Fernandez’s employment contract in late 2009.”

All good dimoKKKRATS to be sure. Doing what dimoKKKRATS to best in raiding the coffers.

The last time a small California town (remember the Bell scandal?) had people making this kind of money a bunch of people got indicted. The officials there claimed everything was legal and above board also.

My small city (in VT ~18K people is a city) paid a school commissioner $100K to go away. Paid a city manager $140K to go away. There was also a shady real estate deal with a previous city manager that had the city paying for part of his house. What goes on in city hall is smaller in scale but just as crooked as in DC.

You want a real cluster-you-know-what, look no further than the Dallas Independent School District.
