Vladimir Putin's Russia seized Ukraine's Crimean peninsula by force on the weekend and now has his sights on the rest of his Slavic neighbor. The brazen aggression brings the threat of war to the heart of Europe for the first time since the end of the Cold War. The question now is what President Obama and free Europe are going to do about it. --SNIP--
In the brutal world of global power politics, Ukraine is in particular a casualty of the Mr. Obama's failure to enforce his "red line" on Syria. When the leader of the world's only superpower issues a military ultimatum and then blinks, others notice. Adversaries and allies in Asia and the Middle East will be watching President Obama's response now. China has its eyes on Japanese islands. Iran is counting on U.S. weakness in nuclear talks.
The Ukrainians can't be left alone to face Russia, and the Kremlin's annexation of Crimea can't be allowed to stand. Ukraine must remain an independent state with its current borders intact, free to follow its democratic will to join the European Union and NATO if it desires. The world is full of revisionist powers and bad actors looking to exploit the opening created by Mr. Obama's retreat from global leadership, and Mr. Putin is the leading edge of what will quickly become a new world disorder.

Will that distinction matter, if the Ukraine slides back into Putin’s dream of creating a new soviet bloc, will America’s Influence, and human freedom become a fond memory? This is a pivotal moment, all eyes are on what we do next.
It worked out so well for Great Britain, let's give it another go!
Fill your tank, pack your bags, and head east.
So that’s where you end at - the old “chicken-hawk” argument of the abject liberal cowards.
Seen this too often.
I posted to you about political and economic pressures on Russia, maybe stop wetting yourself for 5 minutes and have at the courage to consider at least that much.
Look, you are gung-ho to protect Ukraine’s 1954 gift from Khrushchev. That’s fine.
Just don’t ask us to sign up with you.
I am for resisting Putin’s illegal invasion of Ukraine. If you want to rollover for Putin just save him the time of sending NUCLEAR BOMBERS towards the US and go live in Russia and do your groveling at his feet.
I wasn't arguing anything. Merely stating a fact.
Human Freedom. There is no human freedom in that part of the world. There hasnt been for centuries.
We cannot export liberty and freedom. I am all for protecting our own. But, they are on their own. I do not want to spend a nickel of our money, nor a single life, to give them something they are unwilling to stand up for themselves.
The Bush/Cheny doctrine believed both could be achieved. "Throngs greeting us as liberators in the streets". And we DID do exactly that in Europe during WWII. Ukraine has many periods in history when they were a free people. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Ukraine
That was a different time. And we had leveled those countries.
We do not have the money to do this any more.
Sorry, but the reality is that we are as bankrupt as the USSR was in ‘89.
Broke or not, we may not have a choice. I hope I'm wrong!
The level of debt, both in government and consumer debt, is so high it could not tolerate the necessary inflation needed to fund a war like that.
It would bankrupt companies and individuals. The people here could not stomach that.
It’s a sad state of affairs, but it’s the truth.
I read a story last week about Russia negotiating with 8 countries around the globe for warm water ports for their navy. That tells me Putin has no intention stopping in the Crimea. It is entirely concievable that we will not get a choice. America is the last big stick of the free world, Europe can't stop Putin and they know it, even though we have clowns in DC trying to take a military response off the table. I have long said when Bush left, he took the last of the serious or even mature minds with him, James Baker, Dick Cheny, Condi Rice,John Negroponte, John Danforth and others. Now we have nothing but clowns, childish Narcissist, that are way in over their heads.
Keep in mind that we had an industrial base in 1940. We don’t have that anymore—let alone high school grads who know what a lathe is...let alone how to use one.
Also the downside of a high tech army is that the production takes forever.
Those are the concerns I have.
The logistics are not as tough. We could set up forward logistics in Poland and other bordering countries. That would be the EASY part. I am sure there are still stockpiles in Germany and Turkey.
If he continues westward then it’s a problem. But I’ve seen a couple of retired Army guys on TV stating that their conscript army is really not that great. Versus our army that has ten years of live action combat, it would not be much of a contest.
I just cannot put myself in Putin’s head and figure why he would want to tangle with us.
You would have to split your forces, with a part going up towards Minsk. Another group going towards Odessa. But make sure the bulk of your group continues on to Volgograd. For some reason the German maps don’t go much further than that. You could probably pick up new maps on the other side of the Volga.
//sarcasm
He'll take all he thinks he can get away with, and he has 0bama's number. So long as MSNBC pronounces Dear Leader an enlightened, peace President Putin has nothing to worry about. Heck, he may even arrange another Nobel prize.
Your offensive plan, though, could stand some improvement. I say we take an army group - call it "A" - and send it toward the oil fields in the Caucasus. We let Army Group B take Volgograd and protect their flank. What could possibly go wrong?
I like that B group. He is so good, lets send some to Moscow. He can handle this himself.
