(Reuters) - Ukraine mobilized for war on Sunday, after Russian President Vladimir Putin declared he had the right to invade, creating the biggest confrontation between Moscow and the West since the Cold War.
"This is not a threat: this is actually the declaration of war to my country," said Ukraine's Prime Minister Arseny Yatseniuk, head of a pro-Western government that took power when Russian ally Viktor Yanukovich fled last week.
Putin obtained permission from his parliament on Saturday to use military force to protect Russian citizens in Ukraine, spurning Western pleas not intervene.
Russian forces have already bloodlessly seized Crimea - an isolated Black Sea peninsula where Moscow has a naval base. On Sunday they surrounded several small Ukrainian military outposts there and demanded the Ukrainian troops disarm. Some refused, although no shots were fired.
Russia has staged war games with 150,000 troops along the land border, but so far they have not crossed. However, pro-Russian demonstrators have marched in the east of the country and have raised Russian flags over government buildings in several cities, in what Kiev says is a move orchestrated by Moscow to justify a wider invasion.
Ukraine's security council ordered the general staff to immediately put all armed forces on highest alert, the council's secretary Andriy Parubiy announced.
The Defense Ministry was ordered to conduct a call-up of reserves - theoretically all men up to 40 in a country with universal male conscription, though Ukraine would struggle to find extra guns or uniforms for significant numbers of them.

“With a Russian Destroyer in Havana, Pootie Poot has his Ts crossed...”
That ship isn’t a destroyer. It is Russia’s version of the Pueblo and the Liberty.
Nukes for a nation are a lot like guns for an individual.
Never, Never, Never, Never, Never, Never, Never, Never, Never, Never, Never, Never surrender them.
Ukraine defense minister just said they cannot defeat russian army.
Did Lurch compare Putin to Genghis Khan? Just wondering.
Thats jenjis khan to you.
As I recall , there was a Russian mobilization that steamrolled into Georgia
and there was a movie about it .
THE QUESTION SHOULD BE: CAN THE RUSSIAN ARMY MOBILIZE AND STRIKE DEEP INTO THE HEART OF EUROPE BEFORE ANYONE CAN PUT UP A DEFENSE?
Somehow, in that scenario, I don’t think a ‘REFORGER’-type deployment would work. If that happened, the only thing we could fall back on was our nukes.
We...and the rest of Europe...would be well and truly screwed.
You don't mean the one he just pulled out of his ass, do you?
I would consider it an honor to be compared to Genghis for exploits in war. That dude is the #1 by far of all conquerors. He never lost a battle much less a war. Every war college in the world studies his exploits with amazement at how one man from a usually insigificant country could amass the largest empire in history. The early Russians lost many battles and wars to the Mongols and had to live under their thumb and pay tribute via the GoldenHorde. They also learned cavalry tactics from the Mongols. Before WWII Germany learned these Mongol cavalry tactics by visiting Russia and applied them to tanks and men instead of horses (i.e. Blitzkrieg). We used the same tactics going into Iraq.
.....I think you are closest to being right this morning. I would add that the Russians historically end up shrinking back to mother Russia and since 1945, unlike the US, they have little “hot” military experience which means few NCO’s and few Officers that know what the hell they are doing.
Moreover, in the past 20 odd years Euro countries and Russia have become more westernized and capitalistic. Smart phones, computers and the Internet have CONNECTED them to our world after decades of hopelessness. So, do 150,000 Russian soldiers, with no combat experience, want to die for Vlad or go home to their girl and some drugs and some rock music? I honestly don’t know but for some reason I doubt it.
Then, the question becomes will The Ukraine boys gut up for a big fight with lots and lots of dying?! Again, I don’t know but I doubt it.
So, my prediction is a lot of breast beating on both sides, a few fights and some dying then Russia caves and goes home under some face saving “cease fire” that lasts 60 years like Korea.
Our best interests as a nation are I think that the Russkies fire off their own little Vietnam and the Ukraine boys kill tens of thousands of them like the Afghanis did. Russia’s been wanting to burn up some of their bullets so The Ukraine may just accommodate them.
In any event, with a tiny army and ROE’s in favor of the enemy I am adamantly opposed to even one of our kids getting shot over there. Let em kill each other to their hearts content and leave us out of it. With Jarret at the controls, I doubt we will get involved.
Hey Barry — The 1970’s called. They want their curtains back.
The Typhoons are a memory. All six have been retired and 3 have been scrapped. The other three are sitting with empty missile tubes as the R-39's have been retired from service. They may get the new Bulava missile, they may not. Probably depends on how successful the new Borei-class boomers are. Three are built, two are in active service. The remaining Typhoons will probably be scrapped.
or they kept some just in case this would happen. do we really know???
No....no he compared Putin to Jen-jis Khan...
Georgia is a lot smaller though. And has a sizable armaments industry.
Ah....I didn’t realize that. Thanks for correcting me.
Does Russia have JUST the Borei-class to work with? Do they have any other workable boomers to use? I mean...if I wanted to try to intimidate potential enemies, I would let the hint drop that this was a possibility.
