From a technical point of view, couldn’t an external battery with a couple of wires attacted to the internal battery’s contacts work?

I don't believe so, but I've never tried to hot wire a battery for a MANPADS.

Not really. As I understand it, the batteries provide several different voltages to the missile and launcher sight/launcher electronics. You might be able to cobble together a substitute but it would be cumbersome and a problem for the user — using the MANPADS in an operational environment.
