Putin Says Russia’s Reaction in Ukraine ‘Completely Appropriate’

MOSCOW — Russian President Vladimir Putin said there’s no sign of any reduction in the threat the Kremlin sees to Russians and Russian-speakers in Ukraine and defended his government’s reaction to the crisis there, the Kremlin press service said Sunday.
In a telephone conversation with German Chancellor Angela Merkel Sunday, Mr. Putin “drew attention to the unrelenting threat of violent actions by ultranationalist forces, putting in danger the life and legal interests of Russian citizens and the whole Russian-speaking population,” the statement said.
“It was underlined that the measures taken by Russia are completely appropriate to the extraordinary situation,” the statement said.
