The new Ukrainian government says it has been invaded by Russia, and has appealed for the United States and United Kingdom to protect it, as they guaranteed under a 1994 agreement.
The move came after pro-Russian gunmen seized both main airports on the Crimean Peninsula early Friday, a day after other militiamen took control of the regional parliament building. With gunmen in the building and the Russian flag flying from the roof, deputies appointed a new government and passed a motion Thursday calling for a referendum on the future as part of Ukraine.

Although I certainly would not want America to place boots on the ground over there, I would very much prefer that America would supply arms, openly and unapologetically, to the Ukrainian rebels; and not just small arms, either, but tanks and warplanes. Call it a proxy war, if you wish—much like China fought against the US in Korea some 60 years ago.
But this is merely what I would prefer; it is not what I believe is likely to happen.
Agree.
And I am tired of leaders who betray the troops that are ordered to fight in those wars.
Never asked you.
Simply stated this old man would defend her even now.
You are correct, but all you have to do is look around to see very few give a damn. As long as the EBT cards work, there is plenty of dope and Sunday NFL football, very few give a damn if Americans can wear their shirt flags to school in their own Country. Now, on the other hand, if the judge said the school could ban the wearing of shirts with the Mexican flag, there would be hell to pay.
You march to the sound of the guns, or the guns will come find you.
You can't get out of an incipient world war by hiding.
Hello? Obama's a Communist; he's in this right up to his hugely lobate ears. Hell, he's third- or fourth-generation Red here. What makes you think he will "stand up" to anything Putin the journalist-slayer cares to try?
"His mommy was a Commie
And his folks were KGB!"
We aren’t going to war with Russian moron.
We couldn’t win if we did.
If you want to fight, stop flapping your gums on the internet and go on your own dime.
"More flexibility", remember? This is the flexibility.
Luser. Just run the red flag up over your house, then. Oh, and mail in your voter ID card -- since you don't want to play any more.
Still here?
Coward.

Why won’t you put a Nazi flag on and travel to Ukraine to help these idiots burn their neighborhood and then blame it on Jews, Russians, Lutherans and whoever?
I see the Israeli papers have noticed the attacks on Jews. They aren’t really taking any sides but have certainly noticed.
Internet simpletons attack strawmen they themselves set up, and, SURPRISE! win! no one is advocating an armed conflict with Russia. There are however economic and strategic relationships, dependencies, deals, treaties that can be and perhaps ought to be broken by the West, D’UH!
Because someone needs to stay home and wipe the drool off your chin.

Some people are simply unable to handle freedom.
Given the Ukraine’s horrific history of oppression by outside actors (mainly Russia), that makes me wonder how much pressure was applied to make them sign. “Give up your nukes or you’ll get no gas from us.” (Russia)
Granted, the nukes are also a liability in some ways, and an expense, but in such a dangerous neighborhood...
We are OBLIGATED BY TREATY to support Ukraine! That is the ONLY reason they gave up their nukes in 1993!
Yes, but it was not that simple a treaty.
Russian were promised some things too.
But the argument will be what is the legitimate government of Ukraine. That is where Russia will step in and take over.
I am not defending them, but that is what is happening.
China knows that no one will help Tibet.
Yes. There was a time when Reagan tried to help a little. Probably not much since then.
