When I was in the Army, it was roughly the same way. They wouldn't run away, but guys would time their exits and entrances past the flag to avoid Retreat( which is what this girl is talking about - every day at 1700 hours). It wasn't out of disrespect, it was just that, once the music starts, you have to stand there at attention for a few minutes until the flag is fully folded, and this is right at the time you're off duty, possibly headign to chow. Guys just didn't want to be stuck that extra few minutes. You still salute the flag though, when you walk by, regardless.
