NAPLES, Italy The Navy relieved the commander of the USS Taylor on Tuesday, about two weeks after the Florida-based frigate ran aground in the Black Sea.
Cmdr. Dennis Volpe was relieved by Capt. Jim Aiken, commander of Task Force 65, which controls surface ships in the Navys 6th Fleet waters in the Mediterranean and Atlantic. A preliminary inquiry into the grounding resulted in a loss of confidence in Volpes ability to command, according to a 6th Fleet news release.
Volpe was temporarily reassigned to the staff of Destroyer Squadron 14 in Mayport, Fla., Taylors homeport. His duties as commander of the Taylor are to be assumed by Cmdr. Chris Cigna until a permanent replacement can be found, according to the release. A full investigation into the grounding is underway.
The Taylor ran aground on Feb. 12 as it attempted to moor in the Turkish port of Samsun. No one was injured in the incident, and the ship was later able to complete the maneuver without further problems. The ship remains in Samsun for damage inspection and repair, according to Cmdr. Phil Rosi, a spokesman for 6th Fleet.
The Taylor and the USS Mount Whitney, an amphibious command ship and the 6th Fleet flagship, entered the Black Sea on Feb. 4 on what the Navy said was a routine and pre-scheduled deployment to the region. The Taylor was scheduled to continue on to 5th Fleet waters in the Middle East. The Pentagon announced the deployment in January, after terrorist groups threatened to disrupt the Olympic Games in Sochi, the resort town on Russias Black Sea coast.

McCains dad and grandfather were both admirals. He should have never been allowed to fly and would not have except for family.
watch out for those rocks and shoals...
I think it partially made up for it with 5 years at the Hanoi Hilton.
“McCains dad and grandfather were both admirals. He should have never been allowed to fly and would not have except for family.”
Miracle he ever graduated the US Naval Academy if you want to go back that far. Usually aviators come from the top of the class, not the guys vying to be “Anchor Man”.
Just about every time that a ship in commission in the United States Navy runs aground, three things happen:
1. The Captain is relieved.
2. A discussion ensues on Free Republic wherein the savvy old salts explain that this is how things happen in the Navy: put your boat on the beach and you get beached permanently, period.
3. A group of ignorant posters jump in to attribute the relief to a purge, Obama’s hatred of the military, some evil conspiracy among Communists and Al Queda, or some variation on those themes.
I can only conclude that the ignorant ones remain so voluntarily, anyone who pays the least attention to such things on this forum understands how the Navy works thanks to the many Freepers who educate us daily. Thanks guys.
Ever hear of Chester Nimitz?
The Captain is lucky he only lost his job for embarrassing dumBO like that.
It’s just that way. Running a ship may or may not be the Captain’s fault but it is always his responsibility.
That is, running a ship AGROUND. Fortunately I won’t be canned for lousy proofreading.
Then, I went to the brown shoe Navy (Naval Aviator) and it seemed that the whole squadron could ding their planes and nothing happened to the CO. Now trying to get to the top made lots more sense!
As an aside, over in the Air Force, if anything happened to a plane (crash or bad ding) the skipper was relieved.
So the AF and the black shoe Navy are a lot in common.
Morel of this story: Go Naval Air!
........well, my support for the Navy in general is still strong, but I agree with you on the homosexual and women thing.
Namely, the upper layers of the officer corp in all services have no question hid under their desks since Obama’s Marxists arrived at the white house.
The oath I took included the words “against all enemies, foreign AND DOMESTIC.
I salute your service.
Thank you !
And, one last thought, like Cruz standing up to Power in the Senate, at great risk, even physical risk, I’m disappointed that apparently only one officer stood up to Obama. That was the doctor whose name I forget and who went to Leavenworth.
These officers did take an oath to protect this country and its constitution against all enemies FOREIGN AND DOMESTIC............so, at what point do we start seeing some of that because IF Obama, Biden, jarrett, Pelosi and Reid are not destroying the Constitution then the oath we all took has now been made meaningless.
