NFL teams have met Michael Sam, the person. They unsurprisingly came away with glowing reviews. But when it comes to Michael Sam, the football player, workouts at the 2014 NFL Scouting Combine proved why some teams have concerns about his acclimation to playing on Sundays.
Sam's drill performances and athletic times were a mixed bag, as the former Missouri standout finished about average among defensive ends. While that's to be expected for a mid-round prospect like Samespecially given the immense spotlight he's been under since announcing that he is gaythe reaction from NFL teams will be interesting to watch.

And in a way that may have been the idea all along. Sams is a lot of things but stupid isn't one of them. He is a very bright and articulate individual...who had to know that his chances of being drafted were marginal at best. He also had to know that if he announced his sexual orientation then the NFL would panic at the thought of being seen as homophobic. By announcing, he's pretty much guaranteed to be drafted in some round and at least given a better shot than he could have expected otherwise. He probably figures that he'll have a chance to play his way on to a team as a result. Not a bad plan once you think about it. We'll see if it works.
Here's how this will play out. He will get drafted. I will be shocked if it's before round seven. He'll last until the final cutdown to the 53-man roster, unless he is injured and receives an "injury settlement". He will not play nary a Sunday on an active roster. He may get picked up and put on someone's practice squad where he will spend his entire career, however long or brief it is.
He's got a guaranteed nice billet in the MSM, whichever way it turns out.
No. 3rd round at the very earliest. Probably 4th to UDFA. This was always the case. And most NFL teams knew Sam was gay before he publicly announced it.
As Ive said on other threads: Michael Sams decision to come out now is aimed at enhancing his NFL prospects, pure and simple. On talent alone, Sam is a mid-to-late round selection and there are plenty of GMs who would only offer a free agent contract.
The word around the university is that someone was going to out him and he went proactive.
He will get chop-blocked, blow out a knee or two and be given a bus ticket home by the men on the team.
QFT...thumbs up!!!
Thank you!
I regularly see guys doing 17 reps of 225 or more at my local YMCA. It’s the 4.9 / 40 that is seriously not impressive for someone trying to make waves with scouts. It’s not like he’s a 340 lb offensive lineman or something
I’m 55 with a bum elbow and I can do a 10 rep set of 180 lbs. I think I could do a 5.6 / 40 if I was being chased by the ex wife. I could go at least in the 5th or 6th round - oh, I’m a white guy - nevermind
Someone will sign him, just like the Nets signed Jay Collins to a 10 day contract. Somewhere out there, there’s a liberal owner who will sign this guy because of his sexual orientation and not his football skills. I think a 5th round pick may be too high for Sam, I wouldn’t be surprised if he was signed as a UFA just to serve as a prop piece.
After the 3rd round...which Sam likely won’t make....there’s not that much difference in subsequent rounds between the CBA pay scale and the rookie minimum..I expect they’ll want Sam to end up in a city where he can get a lot of endorsement $$$.
225 x 20 4 sets. On my 5oth birthday.
back to my favorite tag.
