Former “Dirty Jobs” host Mike Rowe narrates a powerful new commercial released Thursday and it contains one powerful message: “Work is a beautiful thing.”

Who’s it for? Walmart.

“At one time I made things and I took pride in the things I made, and my belts whirred, and my engines cranked,” Rowe says in the video, delivering a monologue from the perspective of the factory as related images flash across the screen. “I opened my doors to all and together we filled pallets and trucks. I was mighty. And then one day the gears stopped turning.”

Comparatively by the time the civil war ended there were enough of the other slaves left to carry on the fight and even at that they died by the millions wwi wwii. The weariness of that made boomers of us “all”.

Except for a few. I missed that bus. Not that I didn’t get a ticket.

I listened when the others had the music too loud to hear the Word.

Conscientious objector? There were a lot of them, some honest about it, some not. Wars seemed to be more and more muddled as the years burned on.

I hear you. I googled “hardware capital” and found it was New Britain, CT.

I wonder what they have going on there now.

Look, I’m not *that* old, I’m 56 (almost!) and I remember being taught in school that the 2 biggest industries in NYC were printing and garment manufactury.

And I was working in the garment district, back in the bad old days, and I well remember the guys pushing the racks of garments through the streets. Not samples, product.

It is sad that this seems to have ended.

I don’t know (trying to shorthand here) I was also taught in school that civilization brought about the division of labor and ultimately the increase of leisure time.

But I’m not sure it’s all coming together as anticipated, let me just put it that way.

Maybe it never could.

WWII at least did offer up an evil that was clearly evil enough, to make war seem to make sense. Even the Communists didn’t look so terrible, or so some opined, as the Nazi regime. I don’t know how one would second guess that. Let the Communists and the Nazis duke it out on their own, in an age where the high technology wasn’t there to ward off the fallout? Lick the Communists too at the end as MacArthur urged, but at the price of going down as a treasonous ally?

I don’t think we can cheat the principle that the more honest labor in an economy, the better it is for the people. Money is a medium. It isn’t the thing that people eat, or dress in, or make houses out of. Chasing after an ever increasing retirement per se seems to me a pipe dream. I don’t want to be doing that. I want to do something useful until the day I push up daisies. And then I want to push up the prettiest daisies I can.

Well that isn’t the biblical way, because certain things are in the bailiwick of God that no government could hope to get even approximately right. Your desideratum is one of those things.

Ultimately if a sinner is stubborn enough, he will get the curses that he has pursued.

I see my role as to urge people in the opposite direction. Don’t be stubborn. Give God credit and praise in private and public for being generous, and for knowing how far to go before giving that up and damning someone to hell. Don’t damn anyone to hell that we don’t know that God has.

Sounds trippy, man.

Relax, the things you’ve been worrying about have already been taken care of by the Lord. It’s easier to do well than you think, and yet it’s harder. Because the goal is to exalt God. The stuff you enjoy on earth is only a means to do that, and you might lose some of it, but let it go because God will give you more when you need it.

I first became aware of that years ago. I started checking labels.
I haven’t bought anything but fuel, groceries and booze for over 5 years. My daughter and some friends keep telling me to buy new clothes, the ones I wear are getting baggy because of weight loss. I’ve even been able to save money and now have a savings account.

I can see that little vein on their forehead popping out from my backyard.

I have no love for Wal Mart, but if they are going to invest in America, why hate on them?
