Medic: At least 70 protesters killed in Kiev

KIEV, Ukraine (AP) — Fearing that a call for a truce was a ruse, protesters tossed firebombs and advanced upon police lines Thursday in Ukraine's embattled capital. Government snipers shot back and the almost-medieval melee that ensued left at least 70 people dead and hundreds injured. Video footage on Ukrainian television showed shocking scenes Thursday of protesters being cut down by gunfire, lying on the pavement as comrades rushed to their aid. Trying to protect themselves with shields, teams of protesters carried bodies away on sheets of plastic or on planks of wood.

Protesters were also seen leading policemen with their hands held high around the sprawling protest camp in central Kiev. Ukraine's Interior ministry says 67 police were captured in all. It was not clear how they were taken. An opposition lawmaker said they were being held in Kiev's occupied city hall.

President Viktor Yanukovych and the opposition protesters who demand his resignation are locked in an epic battle over the identity of Ukraine, a nation of 46 million that has divided loyalties between Russia and the West. Parts of the country — mostly in its western cities — are in open revolt against Yanukovych's central government, while many in eastern Ukraine favor strong ties with Russia, their former Soviet ruler.

At least 99 people have died this week in the clashes in Kiev, a sharp reversal in three months of mostly peaceful protests. Now neither side appears willing to compromise, with the opposition insisting on Yanukovych's resignation and an early election and the president apparently prepared to fight until the end.

Hhmmm... Parliament just had some kind of a vote. Won by a large margin and greeted with laughter and applause.

No idea what it was. Espreso feed cut out on me again right after the vote.

I would expect the UN to send reinforcements in to backup Homeland Security. Interestingly their top two force components are from Pakistan and Bangladesh.

They aren’t trying to JOIN the EU. If you can’t get even that right, stop polluting the thread with your ignorance.

They want to be independent of Russia. Read a little bit about how the Russians have treated the Ukrainians and you might understand why they don’t want to be Putin’s butt boy.

Found this...

Parliament of Ukraine adopted Resolution that demands all military and police troops leave Kyiv to their ordinary place of service and stop using weapons against citizens.

And also order for IF to leave Kiev and release all arrested

More talking under way... Intermittent applause.

Yes- what you said. Plus Ukrainians are tired of their extremely corrupt government, fraudulently elected president, and loss of some of the rights they had before their president suspended most of their “bill of rights” last fall.
Not sure where Count M is getting his info but seems to be a common (wrong) viewpoint on these Ukraine threads.

I do agree the US should stay out of it except for praying for the people to be able to find the freedom they seek.

We actually used to do that. Particularly during WW2 and shortly after. It was a fairly effective tactic. Then came the Great Wussification and we stopped.

Ignorance and pollution is burning tires in your own town square and turning it into a slum. Add throwing brick and fireworks at the police and you get some bad results. There are better ways to get political results other than assaulting peace officers and burning your city down.

Maybe the cops shouldn’t have done the “violence first, peaceful restraint” back when this whole thing started...

When the guy at the top of the food chain stops playing by the rules, what good is protesting via the system?

Here is a simple to read overview of what these “wannabe EU” protesters are all about. Pay special attention to where they want to change their constitution to make them more like the Socialist Parliament.

10. What change in the constitution did they want to see?

The protesters want to see a change in the government’s overall power structure. They feel that too much power rests with Yanukovych and not enough with parliament.

Um... Yeah.. . Just like we want to reign Obama in. He grabbed a bunch of power that isn’t rightfully his... In both instances...

No, the ugliness in the Ukraine is not “Just like we want to reign Obama in”, and nobody worth mentioning is trying to rewrite our Constitution.

I didn’t catch the ending but it appeared they were trying to pull down a giant statue. Did they succeed?
