I don’t know much about this situation so please forgive me if my question is stupid. Why does Russia not want Ukraine to have independence, if that is what they are seeking?

For many years Ukraine was part of Russia and a very valuable part too. Ukraine is rich in iron ore, coal, and other natural resources. Thir agricultural segment exported 38 million tone of grain alone last year.

Putin is trying to re-create the Russian Empire and Ukraine is key to that.

When did Russia ever want any of their satellites to have independence?

Haven't you heard of the authoritarianism of communists?

Russia is still a communist country. Putin is not a nice man.
