While Indonesia is predominately Muslism, it’s an “islander” version of it. Most of the people are pretty relaxed. If you ask them, they will of course say they are Muslim, but if you watched them for a day, you’d see they aren’t really a “practicing” Muslim.
Also most of Indonesia still holds on to their older roots of Animism (worship of plants, animals, whatever). They may say they are Muslim, but still believe a monkey crossing the road is an omen of an impending event by mother earth (I made that up for sake of an example).
Regardless, there are extremist groups on many of the islands so it’s not incorrect that he was some sicko, just can’t resist correcting the the claims on this thread that Indonesian Muslims are the exactly the same as Muslims in the Middle East. It is different there.
I worked for a large Japanese company which had a strong presence in Indonesia at multiple sites. They all told me that prostitution there was more prevalent than in Thailand and cost a lot less as well.
A night with a Thai girl which included her making you breakfast cost about $20. In Indonesia, it was about $7.
Some of them brought back Indonesian brands of cigarettes to pass out in the office as souvenirs. When burning, they smelled a lot like weed. I can't say that they were as Japanese laws are quite strict on the importation of narcotics. But they sure smelled like weed.
However, there are Islamic extremists operating in parts of Indonesia, especially Aech Province, where beheadings and rape are all too common. And who can forget the Bali bombing atrocity?
Bangladesh has an even more relaxed version of Islam. This is why you seldom read about Bengali terrorists. Most of them have a closer cultural affinity to India which helped them win their 1970s War of Independence from their far harsher Islamic overlords in Pakistan.
