Cruz: Obama Hostile to Marriage

Texas Republican Senator Ted Cruz told a conservative radio program audience that the Obama administration "is the most hostile-to-traditional-marriage administration this country has ever seen."

Speaking on Wallbuilders Live hosted by David Barton and Rick Green, Cruz said: "The administration has been using the authority of the federal government to try to force states — to force federal recognition of marriages that state law prohibits."

Cruz said, "The Obama administration came into Utah and said, 'We're not going to listen to what the U.S. Supreme Court said. We, the federal government, are going to recognize marriages in the state of Utah [that] Utah state law explicitly does not recognize as marriage' — and that was really, in my view, an abuse of power."

Cruz said the ultimate objective of the opposing political camp is to see traditional marriage law torn down in all 50 states.

"We need to stand in defense of traditional marriage," Cruz said and to allow citizens of each state to adopt laws that reflect their values.

Cruz is traveling the country promoting a bill he and Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, have introduced— the State Marriage Defense Act— that mandates the federal government honor state laws defining marriage as between a man and a woman, Politico reported.

Cruz said that America had never before seen a president who, if he disagrees with a particular law, simply defies it. The president's approach ought to trouble "everybody" regardless of political orientation who is concerned with the Constitution's protections of liberty, the senator said.

When a host, referring to the president's "tyranny," asked: "Where does this end?" Cruz replied, "We need to speak out."

Their war on the middle class must necessarily include a war on stable heterosexual marriage since the success of such marriages are a key ingredient into entering and remaining in the middle class.
