Not that I am against carrying firearms but how can being armed protect from a sneak attack from behind like this? After the hit the man was down and out on the ground and unable to respond. Even if he were not, if the perp disengaged after one hit and tried to leave the scene would it still be legal to shoot him in the back?
The response to these attacks require other measures.
